sill repairs

Hi,i am looking to have the sills renewed.I have bought sill repair kits off ebay to replace the rusted sections on both sides.Does anyone know where a good place to have these done?

Perhaps some members have had theirs done etc.Would have to be localish to me,so newbridge/pontypool would be a start.

Thanks.

Hi there, my mate Mike has his own garage in Pengam, just done mine at a cost of £175, good job, nice and neat

Was that for the whole sills or just the renowned  section from door to rear arch like mine?

Was that to a painted finish aswell Rich?

Thx

 Door to arch and primered

Thats reasonable.Sorry to be a nuisance, but any chance you could post a pic so as i could have a look Rich?

Would like mine done before the winter.

Just been reading your thread. I’m afraid that these cars are not an easy fix when it comes to the sills if you want the job done properly. Its not necessarily what you see on the outside as the rust starts inside where you cant see it. Other than the sill you can see on the outside there will be more work required to the inside. I believe you need some one who knows what they are doing to do this job correctly. Sorry to be the giver of bad news but i thought id inform you of this before you open a can of worms so to speak.

I’ll dig out some pictures of mine before she was done & what you’ll expect to find.

thx for the info flying flea, look forward to the pics.

I AgreeI'm with Stupid!

If you can see it popping through from the inside out, then it will need a proper repair done to stop the tin worm, Mk 2/2.5’s are the worst for tin worm in these areas also boot lids and engine bays.

My car is actually a Mark 2.5. I think the point some people are saying is that it could be rusting away initially on the inner sill as well as the outer. This can happen and the inner would need replacing as well, thankfully mine was finwe. Also, rot can occur around the drainage pipe which is more difficult to repair. I must say having owned and rtepaired several MX5s over the years, the quality of metal in the Mark 2.5 is rubbish, it really was thin.

Mike who did my repair has done several of these over the years and does know what he is doing, I wouldnt recommend him otherwise.

Clapping hands in the air

I have been saying that for years on here and ended up in many a rant fighting my corner.

Sorry for the delay but i thought it best to ask permision from Garath the mx5restorer as he took the pictures & gave me copies when he did the work. My sills looked like there was nothing wrong with them but this is what Garath found.

Got to say that he done a first class job & he is a expert at his trade. Also a real gent to boot

You in a rant…Never Zip It!

Flying flea, crikey those were some rusty sills, especially the near side (i think),the inner sill was totally rotten.Hope mine aint like that Thinking. Thanks for the pics.Nice finish aswell.
