My MX5 is polished and sealed during its winter layup months, never comes out in the rain if it’s avoidable, so hardly gets washed in the summer months, maybe just a rinse or damp leather to get the bugs off, I have a feather duster for the dust.
I tend to use synthetics as they are readily available, and pretty much fool proof.
Recently I’ve been using Poorboys EX, with really good results, its easy on, easy off, leaves a nice shine.
Reading reviews on good old fashioned carnuba wax, Simoniz Original gets pretty decent scores, and it’s competitively priced, so yesterday I bought a tin.
I read that you should never let it dry, it should be applied in a ‘Daniel Son’ fashion … wax on, wax off.
It’s hard work, but I’m quite pleased with the results so far.
Having tried loads of different waxes over the years I now only use Simoniz Original on our MX5 and daily drive car. I agree it’s a pain to remove if you allow it to dry hard, but the result is the same as others I have tried at 4 times the price.
On a Silver car it’s hard to get a deep shine, but many people have comment on mine and what do I use? and are surprised that Simoniz Original is still available…
I use it as well and am very happy with the results.
I always use it in the garage and do 8 square inches at a time in order that it does NOT dry out. It is labour intensive but if you have the time and follow the instructions it is very satisfying.
It is not suited to ‘machine’ application and agree if you use it on large areas you will struggle to polish it up.
So to sum up, follow the instructions, do small areas at a time, do it under cover and DO NOT do it in sunlight or if the temperature is high.
To be honest I never use wax.Good shampoo like autoglym, then micro fibre cloth. My car is very shiny you don’t get swirls, and none of that annoying beading that takes ages to dry.
