simple sat nav suggestions please

my wife wants a simple to program/use machine which she just can sit in the well between the seats & plug in the fag lighter socket (she’s not interested in looking at maps & screens)

she just wants a voice to tell her where to turn etc. with no fancy stuff, UK only. simple as that.

can anybody suggest a simple machine to recommend or should i just plump for a cheap & cheerful for her?.

this forum is obviously american software cos it won’t say f a g! barmy.

 Hi,

We have a Garmin Nuvi bought from Argos if I remember correctly.

A great wee unit, easy to use, speaks to you and has a decent screen and was quite cheap.

Everyone in my family uses it in a couple of different vehicles.

Highly recommended.

I think you get a lot of the fancy stuff for free on these nowadays… Binatone do a really cheap unit at about £50 but personally I would go for the cheapest large screen TomTom (a bonus if it comes with European mapping) as the softwhare is very female-friendly due to the company being co-founded by a woman. We bought a TomTom One XL a few years back (Halfords I think) for £107 Thumbs up

Good luck finding a voice that gets women to do what you want, that is a Holy Grail in itself! Lol!Wink

 TOM TOM every time

I also have a Garmin Nuvi but if you want something simple with voice prompts then you could always look at a smartphone app. I have used Co-Pilot Live in the past and it’s pretty good, I stopped because I wanted something with a larger screen.

There is a Welsh satnav now, Tom Tom Jones

I have an old Tom tom that works fine, but now I just use my smart phone its even easier.

TomTom for me every time too, especially with the current deal of free lifetime map updates on selected models.

For just over £100 you can get the Start 25 UK model, which has spoken street names - useful if your wife doesn’t want to look at the screen.

Loads of other useful features (e.g. advanced lane assist) which you may find useful in the future, even if you don’t use them now.

I have a brand- new-in-the- box Mio 300 with UK mapping for £50 ono posted if you’re interested? Never been used, I won it in a raffle at work.

I’d suggest the bog standard Navigation that comes with Android phones. You can search for business’ or places by name rather than road/postcode. Only down side would be that it’s only as loud as the phone.

Search for the above listing in ebay (just type it in the search box.
Should come up with a 5inch satnav from a seller known as NAVBUZZ,
I got one of these a few months back and its never let me down yet , clear instructions , has free map updates for life .
Comes with all the gizmo's youll ever need with chargers for mains and 12v ciggie lighter and USB. Two mounts (window sucker and air vent)and a girlie carry bag, and a sunvisor that actually works.
simple to program simple to follow
Worth it for less than £40 new.
The worst thing about it is trying to get the mounting plate on it (tab to the top and in the centre)
(i should have been a salesman lol.)
and you dont have to demount it to keep it in the glove box

thanks very much folks for all the advice & recommendations. 'Er indoors will ponder & decide. Confused

PETER9353, that looks ridiculously good & simple as well for the price. I wonder how they do it so cheap, I suppose they make them in India & pay a bloke 5p per hour in the factory?

no idea how they keep the price down but its up there with the well knowns , even has windows CE so some apps can be loaded to , oh and music , films etc . Good little workhorse even told me i was off route in a layby , speed limit warning , cameras etc all bang on too.

My solution

iPhone with Tom Tom software and fm Transmitter and cradle all in one

Hi Peter, just looked at this and it seems almost too good to be true! For the money, it is amazing!!! Can you tell me if it allows you to enter vehicle size? i.e. car, motorcycle, camper an, etc.

it’s probably me being thick but why do you put in vehicle size? (never needed sat nav myself) Confused

Ah! Glad you asked! Some sat nags allow you to this if you drive a bus or lorry, van, motor home or tow a caravan and will plot a route avoiding low bridges and width restrictions. I also have a motor home and it’s a useful extra to have.

what a good idea, a 40’ artic tried to go down my road the other day, no chance, he obviously didn’t have that gadget. had to back out.
