Sir Stirling. The Chequered Flag

RIP Sir. 90 laps completed.
A boyhood hero for millions over decades.
Up There Fangio,Jim Clark and countless others are waiting on the grid for you amongst the heady aroma of toffee scented Castrol.

RIP Sir Stirling.

I met him once (very, very briefly) at work in preparation for when we sent a crew to film his amazing house. He was a true gentleman.

See a couple of good articles on the BBC sport site

Sad news. Along with Mike Hawthorn one of my schoolboy heroes.

As did I…around 40 years plus ago at Knockhill. Was given the dubious task of push starting, with a couple of others, his BMW prototype (?) ( which is all I can recall) when it’s battery failed.
I was marshalling back then. Got his autograph somewhere…at least I think I still have it.
He proceeded, for the rest of the afternoon, to show local track-dogs the right way around Knockhill. Priceless. Really reserved very cool chap.

Edit: My memory…Mmm. It might have been the Ecurie Ecosse Lister. Just remember it was big, dark blue , and very loud.

As previously posted, a boyhood hero, like Mike Hawthorn, from the post-war austerity period! RIP!!!

Agree, a racing legend, It would be nice to see a tribute programe on TV , old racing highlights etc .

Well said everyone! Absolute legend. RIP

Lovely man and a real legend - RIP Sir Stirling.

A short film on the man himself,

Met him in the paddock at Le Mans in 2009. He was a real gent and one of the very best racing drivers of all time.
Sad loss.
RIP Sir Stirling.

I see that the BBC is re-running a documentary on Sir Stirling and the Mille Miglia tonight at 7pm. I recall watching this a few years ago and can highly recommend it.

I can also recommend a two-part movie / documentary on Amazon Prime titled “Brock”. It’s the story of one of Australia’s greatest racing drivers and just as importantly, the story of Mount Panorama - Australia’s iconic circuit.

Perhaps this should be a new thread - lockdown enterntainment recommendations for petrolheads?

All the best
Darryl

Cheers.
I was at the 2003 Bathurst V8 Supercars.
Brutal motorsport, really brutal.
The Mountain sure sorts the men from the wannabes.

I’ve made pilgrameges and driven around the circuit a few times now - the climb and bends are scary even at 60km/h

Love 'em.
Brought these back from Albury 2 years back.

All Ltd Editions.
Unfortunately 2018 represented my last of 4 Oz trips.
Brocky was a God.

We were going back this September for the mother in law’s 90th but it’s looking like we may have to postpone until Christmas or even the new year.
I have every intention of visitng Mt Panorama and the museum again. Bathurst is handily placed about half way between my brother’s place in Canberra and the mother in law’s in Inverell.

Regards
Darryl
