Could anyone clarify if the RF has less head room with the top down than the soft-top. One chap mentioned he had an extra 2’’ on his Soft-top? Is there any official figures that clinch it guys please?
Have had a brief look online and it looks like the RF has about 3/4 of an inch less head room than the soft top ND. Is only a quote from another forum, so might not be entirely accurate…
Interesting mate.
That’s what I was also told by a dealer. Can’t say I noticed a difference sitting in both back to back.
It seems SIZE does matter
Surely with the top down, the headroom is both he same - ie unlimited - I presume that you mean with the top up?
In which case I would presume that as there is more thickness to the RF hood, that there will be less headroom inside, as the total height will be the same.
The RF has the rear screen/clamshell/roll bar behind you, so if you are tall and sit right back your head will hit it.
I sat in a 2019 RF and soft top when new in the dealers and yes the RF definitely has less headroom (I’m 6’ 2.5") My hair touched the RF top but didn’t in the soft top.
And if you’re tall you definitely should try a post 2018 car with the reach extending steering wheel it makes a big difference, You can basically slide the seat forward a couple of notches which allows you to recline the seat back more, which in turn brings your head down. Without the reach adjustment you need to have the seat all the way back so that your knees don’t get jammed under the steering wheel, this in turn puts strain on your lower back because more weight is put on the lower back/bottom when vertical rather than when leaning back more weight is distributed into the seat back along the whole of your back.
Hope that makes sense?
Carl. That sounds like a godsend for me as I do in fact have a bad back.
When you’re shopping look for a '68 reg car or newer, almost all 68 reg are ND2 I think, if you’re looking on autotrader or Mazda Used cars it’s not very obvious, so look at the quoted engine output. For a 1.5 the ND2 output is 132bhp rather than 131, and the 2.0 ND2 has 181bhp rather than 155
Largely agree with Carl_s. Certainly if I was buying a 2 litre, I’d get the ND2 with increased engine power. It revs more freely and redline is higher which suits the car better in my opinion. (I got my Sept 2018 reg’d one back in July last year) Not sure how much difference there is in the 1.5 versions between ND1 and 2 - Probably largely trim and tech etc…
It’s just they would up my budget quite a bit. I’m going for a soft top now, but not sure if the 2018 will fit the 16k i have to spend. Naturally I also want a low milage car.
And if possible: Free petrol for life, free servicing, a date with Charlize Theron,
and replacement back, hips, and knees.
Are the replacement body parts needed now, or after the date with Charlize?
On a more serious note you can get a 1.5 SE+ ND2 now for around £14k, it’s a lot of car for the money if you’re not worried about the fancy infotainment. I’ve driven a 1.5 and it was a sweet engine
certainly more entertaining than the ND1 2.0 but not as fun as the ND2 2.0
…but it can be had for about £4k less than a 2.0 ND2 and is probably just as much fun for about 95% of the time. Food for thought
Here you go, £13,800 ND2 with 14k miles on the clock

Ok, I am just over 6’ 4" and can also confirm the soft top has more head room. I current have an ND2 1.5 SE Nav which is a lot of car for the money and great fun when allowed to drive it! I’ve previously had ND1 1.5 Nav and ND1 2.0 Nav and the ND2 1.5 seems to give the best of both worlds.
Does the ND2 have PPF?
If you mean Paint Protection Film you can have it as part of purchase.
You’r a kind sole Carl, but it would irk me all the time I’m driving it, that it’s not the 2.00. Doubt anyone would get that, but it’s just me and the old man in me.
