- My model of MX-5 is: Mk4 Sport Nav+ Soft-top. Ceramic
- I’m based near: Cheltenham
- I absolutely adore this car. Only one minor issue: the steering wheel is very slippy in the hands. I’ve tried using one application of Car Gods Leather Reviver with limited improvement. It’s not such a problem that the wheel needs replacing so is there anything else I can use; or maybe just keep repeating it?
It’s likely to be a build up of dirt and grease making it shiny.
Clean leather is matt looking.
You need to really soak it in leather cleaner, get some microfibre cloths and soak it, then carefully rub it all around.
Just be Careful, the Mazda leather isn’t very thick, so be gentle and dont use any abrasive.
So leather cleaner first not restorer. Something like Autoglym leather cleaner is good.
Could always treat yourself to an alcantara flat bottom steering wheel!
Thanks Glosrich, I’ll give it a go
The best thing I’ve found are those white ‘magic sponge’ things. Damp it, then gently rub it around the wheel. It’ll take all the keek and grease off the wheel and back to virtually new. I’ve scrubbed my VW Polo leather wheel (and every other car in our fleet) umpteen times when they get shiney and they all come back to that lovely new look and feel.
The standard wheel is awfully slippy , and I suspect treating it with leather care products makes it even worse . I also found the wheel far too thin - which is why I got a new one from Royal . What a change for the better that was
I found the stock wheel to be very thin and slippy, I managed to buy a second hand wheel and like John had that re trimmed by Royal, absolutely love the new wheel. Thicker, perforated leather and thumb grips
Thanks guys; very interesting. I’m not aware of Royal. Who/where are they?
Royal are really nice people with great Coms, took around 2 weeks start to finish
Have a look https://royalsteeringwheels.com
Here’s my Royal wheel. Leather & Alcantara with profiles and flattened bottom. Absolutely love it !!
Definitely recommended
Another thumbs up for Royal from me. It took 3 weeks but the delay was because they had to order the blue leather in.
I have purchased golf gloves for driving. They are comfortable, work really well and give great feel being leather on leather. Cheap too on the dreaded Amazon.
Well Davy, that was quite useful advice. I tried a magic sponge, and while it’s not perfect it does actually make a noticeable improvement. I was getting pretty fed up with it before but since using it it’s been OK. Not 100% effective but worth a try at £3.50!
Good to hear.
