how are these actually attached to the bodywork? by small mudguards i mean the extra guard approx 140mm in length
mine were fitted by prising out the plastic fixings to the under-wing stone guard, slidding the mudguard flange under that, then re-pushing the plastic fixings back into position, from what i remember, also there was an added screw fixing low down under mudguard, hope that helps,
Hi all,
Just resurrecting this thread: am currently struggling to fit front mudguards to my Mk 2.5. Have tried leemarb’s advice above but:
a) The under-wing stone-guard won’t go back on top of the mudguard flange, as the bottom end of it is pushed too far inboard by the mudguard. It seems the only way to do it is to put the mudguard on top of the existing stone-guard.
b) The very bottom screw hole on the mudguard (the one underneath the sill) doesn’t line up (by an inch or so!) with any existing hole. Am thinking I may just have to leave this, or glue the bottom edge of the mudguard to the stone guard to stop it flapping.
Does anyone have any tips? Better still, does anyone have a photo or link to some fitting instructions that they’d be happy to post?
Cheers,
Rob
Hi,
I’ve just bought some front mud guards for my Mk 2.5 and have the same problems, did you manage to fit OK? How did you fit them? I tried a trial fit over the liners using the original clips, but bottom one didn’t fit. The original clips are a bit short due to the extra thickness of the gaurds, are longer ones available.
I also need to paint titanium grey, hsa anybody got any tips?
Thanks, George
Brought pre-painted set for a Road Star?( front-red and rear-silver) from MX-5 Parts, not yet fitted them as having to paint them Twilight Blue, got a step by step guide from the Halfords site.
Hi George,
Finally got them fitted, on top of the wheelarch liners. You’re right in that the original liner clips aren’t long enough, so instead I just used some bolts - bolt head inside the bodywork (with rubber washers / grommets to prevent damage to the bodywork), bolt then passes through wheelarch liner and finally mudguard, locking nut on the outside, and bolt then sawed down to be flush with the nut. Sounds like a bodge-job(!) but works well and looks OK, you have to look hard to see the nuts (which are painted black).
The bottom hole looks like it’s way out of line, but persevere and it will go - the mudguards are flexible enough to allow this. One thing I didn’t figure out was how to get the edge of the mudguard to stick to the side of the wing, so there is a tiny gap between wing and mudguard. I think some mudguards have a strip of sticky on the edge for this but not mine - anyone any bright ideas?
'Fraid I got mine in the right colour so no ideas on painting, but I found this thread which might help? http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/p/8715/47494.aspx#47494
Good luck, and give us another shout if the above is clear as mud…
Cheers,
Rob
Rob many thanks for the reply. I’ve ordered some more clips (like these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280477155522&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT), which I hope will be slightly longer. The bottom hole is smaller than the side ones on my mud gaurds and it is not central in the recess, so I might try adjusting. I’m hoping the larger holes will allow some adjustment to get a good close fit. Mine are secondhand and looks like there has been a sticky strip on the edge, but most of it must still be on the car they came off. Just need to get them painted then I can have a go at fixing on. I’m thinking of putting some underseal on the inside of the wings while I have the liner unclipped, as I’m not sure how easy it will be to remove in future (especially if I can find some double sided tape for the edge).
Thnaks George
