Small print on policy

Just going through process of renewing my insurance!! Adrian Flux £319 10000 miles pa

Tried comparison sites plus…

FJ…won’t insure for my buisness use
Saga…Don’t like my 'cosmetic modifications’
RIAS…same as Saga…so much for benefit of being 50!
SKY…£392
Lancaster …waiting for call back…

But…

Just had call back from A-Plan & here’s my  query…

The bit on my policy saying…‘The Policyholder may also drive a private motor car not belonging to him/her and not hired to him/her under a hire purchase or leasing agreement, as long the policyholder has the owner’s permission to drive the car…’

Up to now I have understood this to mean (as have other people), I can drive my Spouses car on my policy reverting to 3rd party so long as he has valid comprehensive insurance on his car.

A-Plan say this is not so because Spouses car is considered to be jointly owned by me & therefore he jointly owns my 5, so we are not covered in each others car under this clause (we need to be named drivers on each others policy!!

Hubby has just confirmed with his insurer that same clause on his policy means he can drive my 5 on his policy, so long as, not named driver on my policy (could lead to 2 claims for same accident) this is what we always thought.

Apparently there’s been a spate of Police stopping drivers who believe they are insured in this way to drive spouses car & being done for no insurance, anyone had this line given to them or been unfortunate enough to have been stung in this way.

I will make a point of asking this question of insrance company when I decide who to go with & report back their reply.

Have always been quoted less if spouse included on car & motorhome policies, but only policyholder insured to drive other vehicles,3rd party only.Always buy insurance on phone, never online.

Reg.

Hi Liz.   My insurance was cheaper if I put Val on the policy as a named driver, that was with Saga.

Hi Reg, your answer is what I understood to be correct but apparently not according to A-Plan. advisor told me it’s assummed spouses jointly own vehicles but admitted it’s not written as such any where Rolling eyes. Hubby going to ask at local Police station tomorrow to see if its Police or insurer giving ‘odd information’ Not sure I’ll go with A-Plan, still waiting for them to phone back with quote.

I was only saying what happens to me,do not presume this is correct for everyone.I insure 6 vehicles & do not bother with any company with silly rules & small print. There are lots of good companies who want your money, and they will usually match quotes. This year 3ltr S Type Jag fully comp,£140 with AA & free breakdown cover.

Reg.

Oh by the way,I`m ex traffic cop & most police men would not have a clue about your insurance without reading the certificate when you produce it.

No problems Reg, I agree with you on not dealing with silly rules & small print, especially when I’m told ‘it’s not written specifically’ Rolling eyes gives the companies too much room to opt out. I do seem to be hitting a snag with my cosmetic modifications, on the plus side renewal is not much more than last year, so quite pleased at that, but will try AA

Hi Mal, it has been cheaper in the past to put hubby on but his situation has changed so leaving him off.

The standard meaning for the terms above is that the car must NOT be registered to the same address. This is the de facto stance of all UK underwriters so unless the wording on your policy is so specific as to leave no ambiguity at all, I would not take the word of the person at the other end of a phone line - these people are not experts.

Cheers AccHacked. That would make a bit more sense of what I was told Thumbs up Have emailled company to get in writting my specific situation re hubby’s car.

Reg, glad you’re in the know, my certificate was the only way I thought the police would know & AccHacked first sentence now makes sense of insurers statement.

On a 'lighter 'note I just had phone quote from AA
