snow chains

Hi, Can anyone give advice on snowchains on an MX5 please. I live 1000ft up a mountain and having recently bought my mx5, wonder if its ok to use snowchains. Anyone had experience? I have a set of clack and go`s, great things. I often get snowed in most winters and rely on these.

Any comments appreciated, I sold my motorbike for my MX5.

cheers

Pete

It would help to know which MX-5 you have and what size wheels/tyres are fitted to it.

Hi , sorry, they are Bridgestone Turanza ER300 19550R15`s All round…

2004 MK 2 1.6

thanks
Pete

I have trouble with my E Class in the snow and was looking for snow chains but I found this and please don’t laugh it works, Aerosol Snow Chains if you google it you will see various makes. Use gloves when you apply it.

Have you thought about using winter tyres instead?

The latest regs say you cannot use anything that damages the road.

Not tested in court but that basically that means chains and studded tyres can only be used on snow not on a clear road.

Winter tyre rubbers is now much improved on 1980 when we used studded tyres in Aberdeenshire.

So all things being equal you would go for winter tyres but if it is snowey, chains may help a bit but take them off when the road clears.

I would think the MX5 will have problems due to ground clearance with any real amount of snow.

That’s why we have a Jeep and an Impreza for that part of the year in Aberdeenshire.

Worth a punt in Lidl when they come up in the next month or so.

thanks for replies.
1/. I have and use most winters Clack and Go snow chains, nearly £400.00 but go on and off in less than 30 seconds. [fantastic]. So using on snow and then taking off once roads are free of snow is easy.
2/. I live a 1000ft up a mountain, but once down virtually at sea level, I can be in 3ft of snow and look down on everyone else driving around as normal.
3/. My main concern/question is " has anyone used good snow chains, had experience with them on a Mx5 and any issues doing so. I will also be using snowchains on my VW camper van.[ which naturally has more ground clearance]
On the subject of ground clearance and MX5`s if the snow is of any significant depth because my track to the single lane road is 3/4 mile long I just snuggle up by fire and sit it all out…or get my skis out…lol
