It’s fun getting back into rear-wheel-drive motoring - had my most exciting journey home for years last night!
However on the hill towards my home, I finally had to give up about 500 yards from my house (along with a few FWD drivers I have to add).
So, to save further embarrasment at having to reverse down the road and round the corner to abandon the car - I’ve had a look at a couple of web sites advertising snow chains, and something called “Snow Socks”.
Any experiences anyone? - includng durability, and the survival rate of allow wheels?
You could do what i do and have a set of winter wheels(with snow tyres fitted, for the use of)and a set of summer alloys for summer use, quicker and easier to change depending on weather condtions.
But to be really sad i also have a set with wet tyres fitted.
You can get a good set of used alloys cheap on flea bay.
A trick I learned a few years ago in Norway: when you loose traction, just take out your car mats and put them in front of the rear wheels. This will give you purchase and get you going.
Obviously you may want to stop to collect your mats once at the top!
Incidentally, this was the same trip to Norway that I learned that sliding a minibus into a snow blower (think combine harvester with a giant egg whisk on the front) is not a good idea…I wasn’t driving by the way!
Aha! The way to get the mats back is to not leave them behind in the first place - I used to tie them to the back of the car with a bit of string! But with the more sophisticated suspension you get these days (ie loss of cart springs!) this isn’t so easy now!
