So what radiator would you choose?

Here’s the choices I have found:

MX5 City http://www.mx5city.com/cooling-heating/radiator-mk2-16-18 £98 + delivery - not convinced as that’s not the manual radiator they’re showing, new part OEM??

MX5 Heaven https://www.mx5heaven.co.uk/product/mazda-mx5-mk2-radiator-manual-transmission-roadster/ £69 + delivery - definately NOT OEM.

MX5 Parts https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/radiator-performance-aluminium-mk2-25-p-2425.html 42mm core £170 50mm core £193 both IL Motorsport

MX5 parts https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/radiator-genuine-mazda-mk2-25-manual-p-760.html £157 OEM part

I’m thinking the MX5 parts 42mm core at £170 as only a few quid more than the MX5 parts OEM one & seems to be a better radiator.

I know there’s another option on e-bay, but for this type of part I want to buy in confidence & that rules out ebay.

Well I bought the cheap one available from coolparts on ebay with a 2 year guarantee for our Eunos and no problems after more than 4 years and in daily use.

Have recommended them several times and no issues to my knowledge.

Up to you if you want to spend more:-)

I would add that MX5Heaven and MX5Parts list extensively on ebay - not sure about MX5City.

Nippart radiators are perfectly adequate; look identical to OE, except for a slight different drain plug. ILM radiator might be “better”, but do you feel that the MX5’s cooling system is marginal?

My 1.6 has a Koyo radiator, similar aluminium effort to the ILM car. Indicated temperature is always cooler that my 96, over the left side of the gauge scale (not cold). Heater always feels a bit feeble compared to the 96 (which has a Nipparts radiator, fitted about 10 years ago). A car running colder than what the manufactrer intended is not necessarily a good thing. I can see the need if the car is put into a stressed state, such as sustained high revs.

I bought the cheapest ally radiator I could find from eBay. It cost £108. I usually avoid this type of thing, but I thought “ what the heck”.

i received a beautifully packaged item with welding good enough to win awards. It’s 52 mm wide with a twin core. It fitted perfectly and has performed 100% since installation.

i agree with what you say about eBay. 90% seems to be utter rubbish. But obviously a diamond creeps through occasionally.

When I did an engine swop on an '05 Mk2.5 I bought from Coolpartsuk on eBay

It was an Ed Zackery rad and cost £49

I like to keep my car original, so bought the genuine Mazda one, after all the first one lasted 21 years.

The thermostat should prevent overcooling happening; irrespective of a more efficient radiator. That’s what it’s there for.

Thanks for the input guys & my apologies for not replying earlier - ecologists work long & strange hours in the summer months - bloody bats!

But I’m going to go with the 42mm core IL Motorsports one, yes a bit dearer but I want the best I can afford/am willing to pay for, plus there’s the 10% discount & I’ve £100 about to turn up - went missing as Ladbrokes tried t pay my winnings in to the wrong (closed) bank account so it’s been floating about in the ether for a few weeks!

So all in I’ll only be shelling out £52 new for it (taking my £100 winnings in to account )

Now about those induction kits - see seperrate post

The best is probably the original Mazda, not a cheap aluminium radiator offered by IL Motorsport, using some unknown supplier (probably parts of it are from China).

Well I fitted this today, had to take a small nick out of the corner of the fan cowling - but that was more to do with where the hose clip was, everything else was fine - apart from the one school boy error:

Bigger capacity radiator so it’s obviously going to take more coolant DOH! So in short never had enough - toyed with the idea of topping it up with distilled water as a stop-gap but decided against it - will get more coolant tomorrow & then I can be off & running.

If its running cool, maybe the thermostat needs looking at?

Well (hopefully) here are pics of the old radiator & the new one
