So where exactly is the engine number?

Ok I know the engine number is there somewhere but I cannot find it…!  I have a 1.8 Eunos, a 1.8 UK MK1 and now looking at 1.8 MK2.  I believe it is somewhere on the exhaust side but cannot find it.  Can someone post a picture or let me know where to find it?

thanks

I have been told that it is on the engine block beneath the exhaust manifold and you need to remove the manifold to see it.

Ah that is handy!  Thanks I will try and take a look tomorrow.

There is a machined flat protrusion (about 1.5cm by 3cm) sticking out from the side (exhaust I think) of the engine block right at the back edge. The engine number will be stamped on that. You can see it without removing any engine components.,

I will have another look for mine then to see if I missed it last time I looked.

Here’s the location on a 1.6, the 1.8 engine number is on the exhaust side, in the same location—

The first pic just shows general location

The second one shows the engine number marked with yellow chalk

I found the blocks but cannot read anything on it.  Is it an impression so if i wipe it I will not wipe off the number?  Cannot see anything due to crud and old age.  Can I use emery paper or a bit of wet and dry?

I know the MK1 cam cover can identify a 1.6 from a 1.8 by having “Mazda” stamped into and onto it for 1.6 and 1.8 respectively but this MK2 should be a 1.8 but has the same impression on the cam cover as a 1.6!  It says 1.8 on the documents or did Mazda just stamp all of the MK 2 cam cover cases?

I also tried to find the numbers on my MK1’s but cannot find them either!

thanks

found them!  I used a pair of thin nosed pliers with emery paper or fine sandpaper wrapped around the jaws of the pliers and gently rubbed the area.  It helps not to shine the torch directly at it and then you can see the impressions.  It is difficult to reach unless you have very little hands hence the tip for using a pair of pliers held horizontally to the block next to the heater hoses.

Can you post a pic of where the engine number is on the 1.8? I’m having trouble finding it on my Mk1… probably covered in crud!

Many Thanks…

I will try and take a pic tomorrow if I can get the camera in there!

I have the pics but they are on photobucket as I have not been able to post them on here previously.

This is where the engines numbers are located on both the MK1 and MK2 1.8 engines (NA and NB series).  I cannot authoritively say if it is the same on the MK2.5 or Mk3.

http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab216/kempy2525/DSC00628.jpg - the engine number is near here on 1.8 engines (exhaust manifold side) and the opposite side apparently for 1.6 engines (intake manifold side).  I recruited some help in trying to find the damn engine number!

http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab216/kempy2525/DSC00630.jpg - remove the dipstick and it is basically located behind there (see green pen).  The block may be a bit rusty so what I used was a pair of thin nosed pliers with sand paper or emery paper (not too coarse).  Wrap it around the nose of the pliers and clip shut so it does not fall off.  Approach the block under the heater hoses where they go into the bulkhead and gently rub the top of the surface of the block (try not to score the block with the end of the metal pliers).  It is a small piece of metal about 1.5 cm wide and 3 cm long.  The engine number is stamped into the top (the bit facing the underside of the bonnet).  Keep checking your work and you may find you can read the numbers easier if you do not shine the torch directly at the chassis number.

http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab216/kempy2525/DSC00629.jpg - this is a close up but as you can see it is difficult to get your head in there to read the numbers and requires you to crane your neck in different positions with the light source directly above.  It helps to already have the engine number written down nearby from your log book as staring at the block plays tricks on your eyes mistaking rust patterns for numbers!

If your numbers do not correspond to your log book then get someone else to check them first to be sure e.g. a friend or a local garage.  If they still dont correspond then you either have a replacement engine or worst case a rung car with a stolen engine!  A an HPI or police check will on the engine number will confirm this.  Don’t worry 99% of you will have genuine cars having done all of the necessary checks when buying.

Good luck
