Soft top hood repairs

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __Mk 3
  2. I’m based near: _Winchester and Southampton
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Repair to my soft top

Hi
Can anyone suggest a workshop/garage capable of doing a small repair to my soft top near Winchester or Southampton.
I have water coming in behind the drivers side seat and the local garage assures me that since the drainage channels appear to be clear it must be getting behind the repair I made to a small tear last year.
If it continues raining I may have to get a wet suit otherwise! Thanks
Michelle.

Can’t help with a repairer but I can suggest another possibility.

I had clear drains and suddenly found water in the drivers side under the seat.

I removed the seat belt reel and the box behind it .
I found that the drain tube was cracked and letting water in to the box behind the seat belt housing.
Once enough water was in the box - it flowed in to the car.

As for repairing the roof - have you tried a rubber boat repair kit on the inside - they seal very well.

Thanks Dean. Will look into both your suggestions
Michelle.

As Dean says first check that its not a drain tube problem , it should be very obvious if the roof is leaking any amount of water.
If it is the roof then its possible to repair the EPDM interlayer from the inside using a proprietary EPDM roof sealant and patch - Google repair epdm rubber cuts - and following the instructions carefully. Problem will be that these are meant for non moving surfaces not flexible soft tops. A local Rubber Roofer may be able to help you with a small quantity of the required materials.
Good Luck!

Don’t mean to hijack but am very interested and the right sort of local too if a repair is required.

Mine appears to have damage to the outer canvas but doesn’t seem to leak - is there a rubber lining to it then underneath this apparent hole?

Not really
But buy Stormsure - Waterproof Repair Adhesive 15g from Amazon

Yes, there is an EPDM layer which is the waterproofing bit. The woven outer layer makes it look good and provides some protection against normal abrasion and sun. There is also a woven inner layer which once agin provides abrasion protection and looks better than a plain rubber surface. If the EPDM layer is still intact then the hood should not leak.

Little trick when using the adhesive.

Get some plasticine or bluetac

Press it against a good part of the hood so it picks up the material pattern.

Then as the glue is going off - press the bluetac/placticine against the repair so it takes up the pattern.
