the previous owner of my MX5 sort of messed up when they tried to clean the soft top. It had green moss on it and they sprayed it with water proofer after trying and by the looks of it, failing to clean it. I have seen mixed reviews for autoglym shampoo and renovo. Does anyone have a good tip for cleaning my rather mucky lid please?
I don’t believe that my mohair roof had ever been cleaned and reproofed. I had green areas and found that the Autoglym cleaner removed these ok by using a soft scrubbing brush and gently working the cleaner in.
Thank you to everyone who has responded. I sincerely appreciate it. I will attack said roof tomorrow when the weather will hopefully be better. I will let you know the outcome. Here’s hoping
Well it ratted it down here and tomorrow she is going to have her sills done, £75.00. I did buy the Autoglym kit and will definitely be on her this weekend. I will let you know how it goes. I have blasted her with water and whilst dry I can still see the yucky green stuff…I will succeed! lol
As I said above I found that I needed to use a soft scrubbing brush, bought from Asda for about £1, to work the Autoglym cleaner into the green areas.
When spraying the proofer it is best to use something to shield the windows and paintwork. I used newspaper. You can remove any proofer that still gets on the glass and paintwork with glass polish.
I bought my car in January and it had been stood outside at the dealers since Nov in rain and snow. This had soaked into the roof and left condensation on the inside with signs of mould. Blocked roof drains didn’t help either. I found that the Autoglym cleaner also removed this and with the roof now reproofed and the roof drains cleaned the mould hasn’t come back.
6 months after cleaning and reproofing the water still beads off the roof.
Attacked the roof for 3 hours today with the autoglym kit. I have had about 50percent success though the roof does look better. The green is still spaced out over the roof and it is definitely going to need doing again and I wouldn’t be surprised if a third application is needed. I’m slightly disappointed because I was looking for the old miraculous results but I didn’t get that. Still, as I said the roof is looking better and if I can get it really clean in the next two tries I will be pleased. If not, I may consider a new roof.
Use Fabsil as below you will be amazed by the results. I bought Grangers Fabsil Gold 1 Litre Water proofer High Strength (£15.98) Ebay.
First hoover the roof, then wash with a baby bath liquid soap then dry off.
Fabsil. Best way is to get a tin of it… pour it into a receptacle of sorts and using a 3 - 4 inch ordinary paint brush, paint the liquid on. DO NOT get it on paint work or windows - it takes ages to get off. It’s worth masking up and covering areas. I know that sounds like a bit of a faff, but this stuff lasts two or more years from single application so it’s worth the effort. You can buy bottles of it (250/500ml) from any camping shop - should cost less than a tenner.
Keep a wet edge…do one side and one half of car then do other side. Let it touch dry, then do it again. It dries quite quickly.
Now bear in mind, it will smell for a few days… it’s not an unpleasant smell, just a chemical/glue like smell.
All you have to do for the remainder of two years is hoover your roof regularly with a brush attachment…nothing else required.
To be honest, to keep mohair in tip top conditon, all you really need to do is keep hoovering it. It’s the dust it collects that makes them go grubby - washing only exacerbates that issue. Hoovering makes the fibres stand up as well as removing dust - and that’s how it repells water.
