Solar powered battery charger

My son in Surrey has just bought a tempermental Italian almost-classic and rented a lock-up but with no electricity

Even if he islolates the battery from the key in the boot, he’s going to need some form of battery conditioner so has anyone any experience of solar powered units presuming he could mount the panel on his shed roof and run wires directly down to car, or are these just toys?

They do work but if the car has an alarm/immobiliser then these do take quite a bit of current from the battery. I would recommend he gets an emergency battery starter as well. I bought one and after having to leave a car in a cruise terminal car park for two months, it boosted the battery and it started with no problems.

It is from Amazon, something like this

I had a similar problem with my motorhome, it is stored away from home, and may not be moved and therefore the batteries charged for several months during the winter.

After researching many panels and companies I went for a controller and panel from  https://www.photonicuniverse.com/.

Have a look at their comprehensive web site or talk to Tom for advice.

You need something from their https://www.photonicuniverse.com/en/catalog/list/category/20W-60W-solar-panel/ range

I have also fitted a Heavy Duty Battery Disconnect Isolator Cut off Switch 12v (4.75 on ebay) the supply from the solar panel is to the battery side of the isolator so charging takes place, any discharge from the battery is disconnected.

Do not leave the solar panel connected to the controller unit without a battery attached, you will fry the controller, also bear in mind that there is a value to the solar panel so it could be stealable from an isolated place.

Depending upon the angle you mount the panel at you will get a lot less output from it in the winter when the sun is low in the heavens than the summer when it is overhead at mid day - thats when you will be using the car and charging it via its alternator!

All in all I do not regret fitting the solar panel to the motorhome, I have also fitted a Safefill refillable LPG cylinder, but thats another story, pm me if you want details

I have a similar set up. The only thing I can add is charging can drop off in the winter so over spec the panel.

Thanks Jeff; Amazon and mini battery pack solution taken and son delighted

Saw these sort of things at Silverstone Classic over last couple of years but never at such a deeply discounted price
