RUST
As you most likely know if you are in the market for an MX5, these cars love to rust. The car has sentimental value to me, however, so I have tackled the rust whenever it has become an issue.
In 2016 I had the rear sills repaired at a cost of £600 at a restorer/body shop.
In January 2020 I had Waxoyl applied to the car at a cost of £395 by Ultimate Car Paint Protection, having first had the rust on the nearside sill, door and quarter repaired by an Accident Repair Specialist in December 2019 at a cost of £1139.
In 2022, the car failed its MOT because of corroded front chassis rails. I took the car to a Japanese car specialist and spent £1150 having a new chassis rail section to MOT standard welded in, and sealed for future protection against rust (some photos attached – more available).
As per the photos, there is currently some surface corrosion on the rear wheel arch. Following the latest MOT, the car now has advisories that both outer sills are rusty.
SERVICING AND OTHER WORK
The car has a full-service history, and has been regularly serviced by either main dealers (Mazda, Pilling) or Motest.
The car had a cherished plate, so all the invoices, etc. relating to work done show that registration. I have, however, put the cherished plate on retention, so the original plates are on the car.
A new timing belt was fitted in September 2015.
The clutch was replaced in May 2017.
The rear tyres were replaced in July 2020 (Vredestein Ultrac Cento). In the same year, the car failed its MOT as the arrows on the tyres were facing the wrong way. This was immediately remedied!
At the same time the rust repairs were carried out in 2019, all four alloy wheels were refurbed at a cost of £320.
When serviced in June 2023, front tyres 4.6 mm and back tyres 6 mm.
New front brake pads and discs were replaced in January 2021.
A new alternator and battery were fitted in April 2023 at a diagnostics specialist at a cost of £647.
GENERAL CONDITION
The car comes with a Mazda alarm, electric windows, heated front seats, leather upholstery and an AM/FM radio with CD player. I can throw in a Tunecast Auto so you can listen to your digital music player.
The car has been garaged all year round since at least 2007, and the mohair roof is watertight.
As to be expected for its age, the car does have some scratches. It is regularly cleaned internally and externally, and more recently has been cleaned by a local valeter using Autoglym products, PH neutral body shampoo, tyre dressing, wheel cleaner and fast action glass cleaner.
It is both smoke and pet free.
Overall, the car is in good condition, allowing for its age.
It comes with one key.
Located in Hemel Hempstead.
REASON FOR SELLING
This car belonged to my husband (the previous owner). I could have sold it when he died, but kept the car because I knew how much fun he’d had driving it.
I also took over membership with the MX5 Owners Club and have attended national rallies and runs, as well as organising and leading a couple of runs myself.
This car really is great fun to drive, but I would now like to upgrade to something more modern.
I’m selling with surface rust as I want the car to be seen as it is, without hiding anything. It’s a genuine and much-loved car.
Inspections welcome.
