Someone knocked off my door mirror!

So, someone has kindly removed my driver’s side door mirror - I assume a car has come too close and clipped it as it was the side facing onto the road. That said there appears to be no visible damage to the plastic or the glass mirror, wouldn’t you expect to see some signs of impact?

Note to self: in future always fold mirror away!

I’ve ordered a replacement, but wondered about removing the damaged mirror in the meantime. It’s hanging on by the electrical cable… I don’t want to mess around removing the door card really until it’s time to replace it, would it be OK to cut the cable and tape off the end for now?

The damaged mirror is not salvageable and the new unit comes complete with the wire and connector. Just after some forum advice.

I spotted these a while back - might allow you to repair the mirror and have a spare.

PS - not sure I would leave the live mirror wire hanging out after cutting it off.
I would take off the door card now - remove the mirror properly - then replace the card after fitting the new mirror.

I would avoid cutting the wires until you replace the whole mirror. When I replaced one of mine I tied a stout piece of string to the plug in the door and pulled the wires through with the string following the wires out. I then tied the string to the plug on the new mirror to pull the wires back through the door. I think this saved some time and swear words!

While waiting for the replacement mirror I used some black gaffer tape (cars black) to secure the mirror back in place.

Thanks, I’ve managed to successfully stick the mirror in place for now using strong adhesive 3M pads until the new unit arrives. Good tip about using string to guide the wires through the door.

I understand there are just 3 screws holding the door card in place, I know there is one in the cup holder and one behind the door release lever - is the third hidden behind the silver finishing detail on the inside handle? Also, are there clips holding it on, do I just gently prise in from the bottom?

I looked on YouTube for a video as guidance. My MX5 is an NC3.5 and I found this was a little different to the NC3 in as far as the screw at the top of the grab handle goes.

I think you’re right about prising the door card from the bottom. I have a cheap set of plastic trim tools which I purchased off everyone’s favourite auction site.
Even with the trim tools I broke a plastic clip which I’ve not replaced to this day!

Is yours like this? (Couple of minutes in).

That’s the same as mine, thanks for sharing that it’s much appreciated. Looks like I should expect to break a few of the door card clips :joy:
