SOS Car for sale

Just seen the car being rebuilt in the TV show Car SOS is up for sale on EBay.

So the family get the TV show to spend money and time on the car which was worth say £200 as a non runner.

The TV company did it to put a smile on the persons face and make a programme for the series.

Now the family want to profit from the TV company or did the family pay for the TV company to do the car up?

Interesting case here if they are profiting from the sale, we cannot know either way.

It could be bad press for the series if this if the TV show paid and the car should then be sold and the proceeds given to charity if the programme company paid for the refit and the gent is no longer able to use the car.

i only watched this a few weeks ago. it doesnt look the like the best of care has been taken with it.

Last year, the Grand Tour borrowed one of my cars. They send a covered trailer to collect it and return it, there was various admin functions that were completed before hand, they hired me a car to replace that one that they had for 4 days. With hire car cost, transport etc I would estimate the cost to them was around £1,000. The car appeared in an action shot that lasted all of 4 seconds. It was not the only car they borrowed for the 10 minute piece. I have worked on events where the end result is a 30 second internet video that had 35 staff, event catering, race circuit, stunt cars, motorbikes, safety crew, including paramedics, and on and on. I billed them £1,500 alone just for tyres used as well as a daily rate for being there.

Car SOS is a prime time, hour long, entertainment program shown on 3 major channels and repeated regularly on digital channels here and abroad. The cost of repairing the car, any of them, is unlikely to have even come close to the catering budget for the episode.

The reality of this is that the production company, and I don’t mean they are wrong in this, have made a program with negligible expense on the main supporting actors, that being the family and the vehicle. The cost of fixing the car is certainly not something that they will be concerned with.

Yes, I agree that the programme will make money from adverts and in reality that will more than cover the costs for the programme.

The two problems I have is,

1 There could be a stink kicked up by the media saying that the family are profiting from the fronted but profitable good works the Car SOS team has done, yes the SOS guys are paid and the programme company are paid by the broadcaster. This is not good press for the reputation of the broadcaster.

2 The family and we do not know if they paid for the work or not, got good work done for their parents car and are now profiting from selling the car again if it is picked up by the media, that is unless the maedia people could be pulled away from reporting on some issue where they are being wined and dined by some PR company executive.

Although I do agree it could be seen as ungrateful and possibly (for want of a better phrase) propheteering, we don’t know the background story.

For all we know the money could be going towards the continuing care of the person the car was done for. He wasn’t in the best of health when the car was done a few years ago.

In fact, in a recent show (Lancia Integrale?)  the owner never got to see the car done for him as he passed away a few days before the reveal.

Best find out the full facts before jumping to conclusions.

Well said…the world has too many cynics

I can’t see what all the fuss is about

Do you have to sign something to say because they restored it , you have to keep it in the family forever? I seriously doubt it.

The old boy that had his Singer nine restored by them didn’t keep it very long afterwards before it appeared on the market and I don’t recall seeing any media frenzy about that !

I love cars but at the end of the day it’s just a machine that was restored for tv entertainment putting it bluntly

This was surely done via a private agreement/contract between the car owner/owner’s family and the TV company.

Why on earth should anyone outside of that agreement think they have any right to complain about what subsequently happens to the car?

+1 really.

It’s their car, to do with as they wish.

I mean, it’s just a TV show, with a crowd pleasing format.

Hardly Moses climbing the mountain, and returning with the tablets of stone.

I feel you are somewhat missing the point. You are looking at this as a car repair job, and then a generous one at that. As if someone came into your workshop and you gave them service because you took pity on their situation and did not charge.

It is not that way, the car is a prop, that is all, in the theatre of a families issues which we are watching. That is the drama and the voyeurism part, not the car repair. In fact most of the cars in that series are there at the same time, the 2 week deadline (or whatever it is does not exist)

You can look at it this way, the family have entrusted the emotional commitment to the car of their family member to the production team, it is not a paid restoration contract. The Production companies motivation is that they get a human interest program out of it. The car / prop / heirloom / emotional situation is the families to own and do with as they please.

As an aside to this debate, I was at the British Motor Museum in Gaydon on the weekend where about 6 of the Car SOS cars are being displayed (including the Integrale mentioned here) and was impressed by the quality of each restoration. I must admit that I was expecting evidence of some hurried / cheap work being carried out but no, the quality, at least from “kerbside” was spot on.

Why do some people have to be so nasty/jealous/cynical/mean/suspicious?

Its not like anyone here has anything invested in the car…it’s up to the family concerned to do as they see fit with it. No one here knows their circumstances, so why gripe about something that doesn’t involve you ?

As has been previously mentioned it is cheap TV even with parts and labour on the car. We don’t have that many car based TV so don’t knock it.

With regard to profiteering  consider this. The main premise of the show is that the restoration is done as a surprise for the owner. The family members who are in on the secret would be in no position to make any agreement with the production company. The person the restoration for is the legal owner of the car and can do with it whatever they wish.

Which would you rather see, a program where a car is restored for a person who for whatever reason can’t do it themselves or a quiz show where somebody is handed a wad of cash for knowing the name of the pub in Emmerdale?

If you read the Ebay listing you will see that the program was shown in January 2016 which means it was probably made nearly three years ago. They also mention the owner had a life changing illness and now the car is being sold due to a change in family circumstances. I think anyone calling this profiteering is being mean spirited and is probably just jealous.

January 2016 isn’t nearly three years ago as the listing also indicates - it would be more accurate to say nearly 2 years ago.

Read the ebay listing and smell the insincerity!

Get off the bandwagon Sword - it ain’t big and it ain’t clever!

rhino 666,

Not that long ago members were moaning about the forum being used less and facebook more for conversations.

I think your heavy handed reprimand of sword has just proved why !

Aggressive posting on any media or forum is not acceptable, if you feel you speak for the club on topics then with this attitude my renewal will not happen.

Feel free to reprimand me if you want but I couldn’t really care less

I’m with Drumtochty on this jack - if that upsets a few people like you and you decide to go elsewhere as a result  - good riddance!!

Crikey, I only put this up as a point of interest, I didn’t mean to spark all this animosity.

I DIDN’T EXPECT THE SPANISH INQUISITION ???
