Space saver wheels

Hi,

Has anybody used a space saver wheel now available complete from MX5 parts for mk 3 models onwards. This wheel comes with a jack/wheel brace/spider wrench. It allegedly fits into the boot of  fold down hoods models, and must be a better bet than Mazda’s ridiculous methods. Even if it fits in boot might get a boot rack for luggage/wheel. Would be interested to hear from anybody who has bought/used one.

Happy Christmas,

RLS

I think the PCD 5 114.3  is the same as a Honda Civic and space savers for these are only £30 on ebay

Only problem is honda centre bore is smaller than mazda , but hyundai wheels fit ??

Hi there - I didn’t buy the kit from Mx5 parts ( far too tight  ). I just bought a Hyundai Coupe space saver ( as recommended on this forum by Geoff Walton) - just the job, tried and tested and all was ok. When I got my MK3.5 there was a jack already in the little cubby hole on the starboard side of the boot - I presumed this was standard fit - jack is ok,but I thought the combined jack handle / wheel wrench a bit weedy, so I carry a proper four way type wrench as well. All fits in the boot and leaves plenty of room for other stuff ( weekend bag etc). the Hyundai wheels are available now and again on Fleabay for £50 upwards,

Did you try the 4 way wrench for size?

I have one and it won’t fit my bolt recesses on the alloys. I bought a slimline socket and breaker bar that I keep in the boot just in case, I hate those supplied puny wrenches in the tool kit.

Yes - fitted all ok - don’t know where I got my 4 way wrench though, cos I’ve had it over 40 years

I just typed in Hyundai Coupe space saver on Ebay and there was plenty ( starting at £30 ),  just needs a bit of double checking but looks like a result.

Hi, will the Hyundai space saver spare ft in a PRHT model mk3.5?

if you don’t get a definative answer drop me a pm with your address and No.  - I’m sure to be passing Preston in the coming week cos I’m off work  and we can try my spare for size in your PRHT.

Picked up a space saver from a scrapped Mazda 5 people carrier from my local garage for next to nothing. It fits in the MX5s boot, leaving space for soft baggage. Wheel offset is the same as stock wheels. Also grabbed the 17" alloy wheels from the Mazda 5. Just waiting to have low profile tyres fitted to them before fitting to my ND. It pays to keep in with your local garage.

I thought problem with space saver tyres is not the space saver, but where do you put the tyre you take off. Don’t know about you guys, but the wife objects to holding it on her lap…

I think it is time for her to reconsider her role in your relationship! After all you have done to assist her in the past I think it is the least she should be prepared to do!

Hi, my Hyundai coupe spacesaver arrived last week and is in as new condition. Fits in the boot and tried it and fits on the car. Looks very skinny compared to the 17 inch road wheel! I am buying a spacesaver wheel bag on the internet and will carry a bungee cord to tie the boot lid down if ever need to use the spare.

Space saver from a Mazda 5 fits a mk3 mx5. I got a 16" Space saver from a scrapped Mazda 5. Never been used. It fits snugly in the boot of the mx5 and still leaves room for soft baggage. Feel more relaxed now when undertaking long journies as I was never happy with the aerosol repair kit

Doesn’t Mazda5 have 5 stud wheels whereas the ND has 4 stud?

Robbie, you are right, but the ND mentioned in my previous note is actually an NC with 5 stud wheels. I thought I had typed in NC but obviously not.
Folks, for those who may not know, Mazda 5 wheels even have the same offset as MX5 wheels so there should be no problems using these wheels. I wait to be corrected.

Hi all i’ve been toying with a space saver for my 3.75 [17’ wheels] but i was told that if you fit a 16’ space saver it could do harm to the diff. is this true or was i mislead ?

I don't want to make problems for myself ! Please let me know if that is the case with fitting different size rear wheels .

If using a spacesaver spare do not fit it to the rear wheels if you have a limited slip diff. Just see the recent post on the ND where the diff was wrecked just by having a slightly different tyre on the rear.

https://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/yaf_postst105672_ND-Rear-Differential-Failure.aspx

If you have a puncture on the rear you need to put the spacesaver on the front and the front tyre on the rear, providing it is the same type and with the same amount of wear as the other tyre on the rear.

If there is any difference in size between the rear tyres then the LSD will be working to correct the speed difference and if driven for any distance at speed then the LSD will be damaged.

Thank you very much for the answer , so he was right ! Good idea of course about swopping wheels over . [front to back ] Thanks PR-Yorkshire .
