Spark Plugs

Hi everyone.

Does anyone know the correct tightening torque for the spark plugs on my 2 litre NC.

Thanks

Spark plugs have a crush washer so all you need to do is tighten them down until they bottom out where you will feel the resistance, then another 3rd of a turn and all will become tight.

Definitely not!  The NC plugs have taper seats and not crush washers and that would over tighten them.  The NGK site suggests 10 -20 Nm  for taper seat plugs, which isn’t much.  If you don’t have torque wrench that small 1/16 of a turn from when the plug seats by hand.

I’m concerned here about using a 1/2 torque wrench with a range 15 to 100NM or higher.

At the figures quoted for the spark plugs, the majority of torque wrenches are inaccurate at these 10 to 15 NM ranges.

The same for most 3/8th torque wrenches, only the most expensive ones by and large will go down to 5NM.

Therefore only reasonablle priced 1/4 torque wrenches are suitable for these low tightnesess.

Unless you can search one out with a very low range at a reasonable price.

Even someone like me, who has loads of tools does not have a 1/4 torque wrench.

I have one of these. https://www.wiggle.co.uk/x-tools-essential-torque-wrench-set/?lang=en&curr=GBP&dest=1&sku=100275205&kpid=100275205&utm_source=google&utm_term=&utm_campaign=Shopping±+All+Products&utm_medium=base&utm_content=mckv|sO8PrgjdH_dc|mcrid|295296961877|mkw||mmt||mrd|100275205uk|mslid||&mkwid=sO8PrgjdH_dc&pcrid=295296961877&prd=100275205uk&pgrid=57437518777&ptaid=pla-524081894817&gclid=Cj0KCQiAnNXiBRCoARIsAJe_1cqKDgZICUDU0s_VtHMNX3l3B2StonGCaeIpjnXDM6TQHFBwp1L3l-gaAj22EALw_wcB

NGK recommend hand tighten the plug to seat the taper and then tighten down a further 1/12 to 1/8 of a turn. Worked fine for me.

No, just bought it from Gumtree ! £10 and a cold wait in a Brighton street to seal the deal. Owner had a carbon framed bike. After 10 minutes use was covered in oil. For all my things for the car I keep a small tool box for my “special” things. On facebook market place there are two for sale in Scotland. One in Montrose and one in Glenrothes so there is no excuse for you not to have one.

Machine Mart sell a 1/4” torque wrench for under £29. Mine came with a 3/8” adapter and is calibrated in inch pounds and NM.

I bought a quarter inch drive torque wrench for cam cover bolts and other similar jobs where errors can be a real nuisance.

It’s a quality tool but they do occasionally appear for a reasonable price on ebay.
