Speakers in Headrest Question.

I have just purchased a pair of replacement leather seats for my Eunos. Unlike the leather seats in my previous Eunos these do not have perforations in the headrest for the speakers. The previous owner of these seat didn’t have the speakers connected so he can’t tell me how effective (or not) they were. I have done a bit of googling and the results are what would be expected.

The guys who have non perforated headrests say they work fine through the leather (almost like standard cloth).

The guys with perforated headrests say it could work with uprated speakers both in the headrests and doors.

The guys who have never experienced it say it won’t work and headrest speakers are a waste of time and I should fit a complete new sound system with huge subwoofers and speakers all around the car.

My question is, have any of you ever had a car with leather seats and headrest speakers that can advise on how effective they are without the perforations?

Or has anybody made a successful modification with external speakers instead of using the headrests?

Hi just fitted leather seat covers (no zip for speekers) about two months ago same as yours of Ebay, found no real differance in sound as other folks say not the loudest, but I have fitted a pair of uprated speekers Mx5parts in each seat headrest, I have a photo. in my profile page. Bit of a pig to fit but worth it, used hog clips and pliers with two hours each seat.

Thanks for the info Vinny. Fortunately my headrests have zips so access is not a problem. I have ordered some new 15w speakers which should be a bit better than the standard 5w units.

I have a mk1 with leather seats, they do have perforations in them, about 12 months ago I replaced the old speakers with the mx5 parts replacements. I don’t have any zip’s in the headrests so had to completely strip the seats and I have to say that I don’t think the improvement in sound quality was worth the time and effort.
