Speedo failure

Hey guys another query, does anyone know of or have info or details of removing the dash and possibly reconnecting the speedo? It looks to just have come off (guess) It was fine one day and the next nothing, i am just guessing that the cable has come off the back of the speedo but it might be a short out, so hense if anyone has wiring diagram or info/previous problem i would be greatful for an update. Many thanks

Hi Stiffy, Isn’t the speedo cable driven?

May be it has disconected itself from the head or pehaps the cable has failed.

They usually cause the needle to bounce a bit at the slow speeds before they give up if its cable driven.

Which model of car are you speaking about?

Hey sorry forgot to say its a mk1 eunos roadster '94 1.8, i need to get a rough idea of what to look for as i have some work going on on wednesday, rear shocks, clutch and halogen replacement headlights… SO while i had it apart i thought id look and get some ideas.

You can get to the speedo end of the cable by removing the top of the instrument shroud thing (just a few screws) and then looking down through the windscreen to see if the thick speedo cable is still connected. It just screws in.

The other end of the speedo cable comes out of the gearbox under the car. If you have the car on ramps it is really easy to spot and very easy to reconnect if undone.

On other imported cars I’ve had there has been a little gearbox fitted to one end of the cable - these have been fitted by idiots and have sometime fallen off and sometimes broken. If your car is a UK model ignore this completely.

Edited to add: if you’re having a new clutch they’ll have to disconnect the gearbox end of the cable anyway - if you need a new cable this would be the time to replace it.

Many thanks muppet, i am starting to recieve parts now so i will look into this and hopefully have it sorted when i come to do the work or atleast have a good idea of what to look for when im under there… Will keep you updated though and it will be good to finally have the cr back to her old self and not the jumpy paiun in the arse that she is atm!!!

Hey guys, completed shocks and headlight changes in a couple of hours yesterday which was excellent! Checked the speedo cable at the dash end and it was still connected, (since the car was jacked up on one side my friend tested the car to see if the cable was damaged and was just a case of a replacement cable) tested and no movement on the cable at dash end, so friends guess that cable is either disconnected gearbox end or that it is damaged somewhere down the line, i still have a clutch to do so when we have it up on the ramps i will check to see if its still connected, if it isnt do you guys have any ideas as to replace cable or make a new one (for as little money as poss, since i have just spent over £300 on replacement parts for my 5)

Many thanks
