Spigot ring height?

Anyone using spigot rings on larger bore wheels? I’m wanting to get some but am not sure what height to get.

Thanks!

You’ll need whatever spigot ring fits your wheel - whip a wheel off and have a measure, or take a wheel with you to whereever it is you’ll be buying your spigot rings from.

Or alternatively just run without spigot rings. They are just an alignment device to hold the wheel concentrically as you bolt them up, and you can do without them if you tighten the wheel nuts progressively and in the right order. I’ve go no spigot rings on my BMW BBS wheels and they fit just fine with no vibrations or wobbles, which is nice because there are no spigot rings available for them.

I have just read that vibrations can occur if you don’t use them.

These guys make them, seem pretty reasonable at £20 and they do 57.1 to 54.1 which is what the BBS need to fit MX5.

How do you mean tighten progressively?

What locking nuts are you using on your BBS wheels?

Aftermarket wheels are usually machined to take spigot rings, I have some rings that are about 10mm high on a set of Smiths Racing wheels.

OE wheels are usually not machined for spigot rings. You need to measure the height of the boss on the Mazda  hub but I doubt that it is much more than 15mm.

At £20 for a set I would try the wheels without spigot rings first. Put the money towards a top-notch wheel refurb or some decent tyres.

I’ve never had a round, balanced wheel vibrate when fitted to a car, and of the 40 or so wheels I’ve had for the MX5 only 4 of them have spigot rings. I’m down to 22 wheels for it now [:D]

By tighten progessively I mean you do all the nuts up finger tight, then go round them all a bit tighter, then tighter still, until the you get to the final nut torque. And always tighten in the order 1,3,2,4. Even with spigot rings it is a good idea to tighten the nuts like this, and I suspect that’s what it says in the handbook for standard wheels too.

I’ve got no locking nuts on my BMW BBS wheels because the wheels were free, the car is currently parked 200 metres inside a walled enclosure with 24 hour security on site and a lot of locking nuts are really easy to take off. I do have some though, and they are shiny blue ones. I’ve not fitted them because taking them off without the key is slightly easier than with the key. For obvious reasons I won’t discuss how.
