Advisory on split rubber boots on the front struts.
I seem to remember years ago you could buy boots that were split. You then just wrapped them around the shocks and sealed them. Either I’m living in a dream world or these things must have been so rubbish that they died a natural death!
So I’m guessing that the only way of replacing these is to remove the spring assembly. Anyone done this, and is it an easy enough job?
Or should I just invest in a new set of shocks and get a garage to do the work?

Are they an advisory even?
Had a couple split a few years back, MOT tester told me but said it’s not worth mentioning, everything else was good.
I know things have changed over time.
Hi Craig,
Is this what you are after ?
Strut assembly off and spring off. Easy enough with the correct tools but by the tone of your post I’m guessing that you don’t. As said, don’t but overly concerned about it but if you are then maybe a garage is your best bet.
No there not an advisory
I think the OP is dealing with an over zealous Tester
Below is the testers manual info
5.3.2. Shock absorbers
You should reject a missing shock absorber only if they were fitted as standard.
|Defect|Category|
|(a) A shock absorber:
(i) insecurely attached to chassis or axle
(ii) missing or likely to become detached Major Dangerous
|(b) A shock absorber damaged to the extent that it does not function or showing signs of severe leakage Major
|© A shock absorber bush excessively worn Major
Lots of useful information, many thanks.
I’m in my 50s and bought the mx5 so I could rediscover my youth and have a tinker.
So far I’ve changed all the fluids and replaced all the brake pads and discs.
Never removed a strut though, so wondered if it was worth the hassle. Looks easy enough when Ed China does it!
