Sportex Exhausts (backbox)

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NB
  2. I’m based near: __Glasgow
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Exhust backbox options

Has anyone had any experience of Sportex exhausts?
Was considering one but with some due diligence I came across this video (not an Mx5), whiich is giving me som serious second thoughts.

TrustPiolot reviews ain’t too good either but would prefer some input from the MX5 forum hive mind

Well that looks pants straight off, avoid.

Although I now own a Mk3 I can thoroughly recommend the Mx5parts SS exhaust back box. I had it fitted to my Mk2. It’s just a straightforward swap over single exit. The tone is just right, sporty without being OTT.

Yeah, I’m going to avoid it completely, looks nice on the website!

Thinking the standard one from MX5 Parts - £112 Vs the £209, I’m not fussed about the exhaust noise, just the emissions for the MOT - not due till August

My son has a MK2.5 and recently bought the MX5 parts exhaust back box ( Not the standard original one ) and is very pleased with the look and sound of it, its worth looking around at alternatives to the standard one , including the youtube vids, that give you some idea of whats available to make the car sound and look better without spending a Kings ransom,
Although everyone’s taste is different.

Anybody tried the Klarius exhausts? Euro car parts sell them but there’s no picture, only a drawing and the Klarius website is extremely short on any details - I like to see what I’m going to think about buying first.

Neither of the two sites says what it’s made of - mild or stainless steel could even be cardboard!

We deal in Klarius exhausts at work. There regarded has good quality in the aftermarket world with sound quality to match OEM but the Chrome trims do have a tendency to rust easier.

Sportex are “ok” but I would personally avoid. They rust pretty fast as you would expect from mild steel. They are a bit boomy but not too bad in the sound department but they are not cheap enough vs a decent stainless option to be worth it.

Agree with @BRUCE225, have purchased the Klarius exhaust on my NA, it’s fine for my needs on this kind of budget. The images are very poor on many websites, but the product is of reasonable quality and I have no complaints.

If your looking at product code 705680791 what price are Euro looking to sell you it at. Showing £119.59 on the Web…Most Motor Factors should beat that by £30 or so.

I fitted a Jetex exhaust to replace the loud system that came with my car. Very well made, in stainless in Sweden I think. Much nicer sound and has improved the torque over the load pipes. Bought direct from them.

I’m really swithering to the MX5 Parts stainless steel one, yes nearly double the price of the mild steel one but the 5-year guarantee is a good thing.

I’ve never fitted a back box before, but going to do this one (once I finally get the old bolts off) - here’s a question:-

Do I need a gasket and sealant as well?
Also mild steel to stainless steel any word on bolt & nuts - I’m thinking stainless steel ones as well.

Thanks for all the input guys, very much appreciated.

I’m new to MX5 ownership & have just swapped the standard box on my NB for a slightly sporty S/S item bought second hand from HertsMX5Breakers ( £100 inc delivery - bargain, I thought! ) . Easy job - I soaked the nuts in WD40 the day before, 2 nuts and 3 rubber hangers. Just a crush gasket needed ( £4 from my local motor shop ) . I took the opportunity to remove the heat shield & cavity wax the bits that it obscures.

You are welcome to have the old one for free if you are anywhere near SW17. It’s not faulty, I just wanted a slightly sporty sound.

Thanks for the offer SixSpeed, but I’m about 400miles north
Have ordered the stainless steel one from MX5 Parts, getting the crush washer, nuts and bolts, and hangers from MX5 City as they were considerably cheaper than MX5 Parts for those parts but a wee bit dearer for the backbox.

I’ve tried the WD40 Penatrting fluid - no joy - so I’m about halfway through sawing off one bolt, looks like there’s a flange gasket, so If I can get that moving it should (hopefully) make getting the other one off - though think that’ll need cut off as well, to be honest. Hoping for a dry Saturday - not so sure about the Sunday - want to watch the footie

A bit of heat from a propane torch often helps with stubborn nuts :peanuts:

These seem more like they’ve welded themselves on over time. I’m about halfway through one of them and it looks like there’s an oval flange gasket, hopefully once one is off, wiggling the gasket just might make the other easier to get off, but I honestly doubt it.

So it appears that the second nut is a castellated nut, but the bolt seems to have been welded on - neighbour has lent me a grinder, so tomorrow cutting the bolt bit off, and then (hopefully) I’ll be able to knock it through!

Also still to clean off the remains of the old crush gasket and the flange from the central pipe has lost a bit of itself to rust - probably use some gun gum if I need to make up any leaky hole - just can’t face replacing the centre pipe just now - maybe in the summer.

That was tough - and without my neighbour lending me a grinder it wouldn’t be finished!

Ground off the bolt, still wouldn’t come out, so then ground in from the right in the pic above so cutting the bolt long ways, went through it about 1/2 to 3/4 the way a couple of taps and it was out. Then had a bit of a job getting the area around nice and smooth for the new backbox to get fitted in, done it and no leaks (well I think none), took a wee bit to start cranking and not quite catching then it did, not sure if that’s as it was still up on axle stands or not, but wanted to check for leaks before lowering her back down. Nice tone from teh exhaust (stainless steel from MX5 Parts) and all seems well.
