Sports Exhaust - is it worth it?

Mazda offer a sports exhaust “to enhance the exhaust note…to give that sporty feel” but does it? Has anyone had it fitted? Are you pleased or disappointed? Does it make a noticeable difference? Does it matter whether you have the 1.5 or 2.0 litre engine? Any comments/observations gratefully received. £650 is a lot of money if it hardly makes any difference, but an okay price if it does.

Hi Gareth

I’m a welder/sheetmetalworker by trade and make the odd exhaust for race and sportscars. (See pic for an example)

IMHO the sound that a car makes is just as important as the styling or performance, in fact its importanter.

Cars are an image thing wether thats a 4x4 and living in the country, or the successful businessman in his executive limo.

The MX5 says sporty, fun loving, live a little while you can.

If this is you then the exhaust will be worth every penny. If you prefer to keep the revs down and like to hear the stereo

then the sporty exhaust is not for you. Nothing wrong with that, nothing at all.

Well judging by the comments I receive every time I take the MX5 out for a club run or just a day out, I would say yes well worth it.

I bought a second hand one from a member here about 18 months ago. It is a Racing Beat  Power Pulse Silencer back box, however I have added a few bits more since fitting it.

Go for it.

I think you are missing the point, the OP is talking about the ‘OEM’ upgrade that Mazda offer for the ND which is the Bastuck Exhaust, not some aftermarket offering.  The Bastuck is louder and slightly boomier than the stock exhaust but is it worth £650/£543 more, I’m not so sure based on sound alone.

Perhaps your missing the point! The OP asked “Any comments/observations gratefully received”and that is what I replied to…

The ND exhaust note is not bad out of the box, with the Good Win Super Street it sounds fabulous…

No you are the one making this up, the OP did not ask for Any comments / observations ( about any replacement exhaust box for the ND, he asked for these commenst and observations on the specific Mazda exhaust box not any exhaust box.Garath C was spot on here.

If you want a sportier sound at a reasonable price, try the Cobalt SS one from Moss Europe. Sounds well, settles down after a few miles, doesn’t upset the neighbors, and doesn’t drone when cruising.
Won’t effect the warranty, Mazda just won’t cover that part ( Moss Europe do)

TELL THE OTHER POSTERS THE SAME THEN…

Just my two-penny’th.  I have an ND 1.5l with the original exhaust and I find that if I drive it like it’s a sports car it sounds “sporty” and you don’t need to break the speed limit to do it!  So I reckon that if I fitted another exhaust that makes it sound “sporty” by increasing the volume it will sound - well LOUD, just like loads of Fiestas, Corsas, Pugs, Clios etc. etc. that plague our roads.  If it doesn’t enhance the performance or increase the mpg but only makes more noise then to me you could spend your £500+ on something  really more worthwhile.

Well said, CB. I still have the original exhaust on my NB and wouldn’t want it any other way. A noisy exhaust can be a pain in the backside on a long journey.
