Squeaky clutch

Since I bought my 2004 mk2.5 Arctic it’s had a stiff and squeaky (when engaging and disengaging) clutch.  I thought it might go with a bit of regular use, but it’s not got any better.  Is there any way to tell if this is the cable, the clutch itself, or something else?

Hi Peter

Your car has a hydraulic clutch and no cable.

It could be pedal or master cylinder but more likely to be the clutch slave cylinder which is more problematic.

Check the system for leaks but likely to be an involved repair.

The squeak could be at the slave cylinder, sometimes the push rod and linking arm needs a bit of lube. I had a squeak also at the pedal, again a spray of lube on the pivot points did the trick.

Thanks for the thoughts… off to Halfords to grab some lube and hope it’s a simple fix and not the slave cylinder.

Have a look at the how to change the clutch slave cylinder guide in the Downloads section, it shows where to put grease if it is the slave cylinder.

My MK2.5 has been stored over winter, used it at the weekend only to find a squeak on my clutch! could you tell me where abouts to lube, hoping that will cure it. Clutch works well, no leaks, just this squeak

I took a look at the what I could see behind the drivers side front wheel, and it all looked dry. Luckily the car was in to MX-5 Parts on Monday for a new exhaust, and whilst on the ramps they gave the push rod a bit of grease which has done the trick

GBH - look at the document Roadster Robbie recommends above. The rod goes from the pedal to the cylinder hidden behind the drivers side front wheel - looks like this http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/clutch-slave-cylinder-aftermarket-mk1-25-p-252.html.

Thanks, I’ll take a look this weekend
