Squeaky steering wheel!

Hi MX5ers

I’ve had the NC2 for over a year and up until now the steering has been quiet as a mouse, but lately when maneuvering (driving slowly and steering quickly) a squeaking noise has started to occur.

It’s only quiet and sounds very like someone sighing. It’s definitely coming from the steering wheel, down inside the cowling.

Are there any bad consequences that might result from spraying a bit of silicone lube down into the crack between steering wheel and cowling? There’s obviously a lot of electrics down  in there from the buttons on the wheel etc.

Any advice will be welcomed.

Take the cowl off, you may get a better idea of what’s causing the squeak.

ah mine makes the squeaky groaning noise too.  Very frustrating.  thought about squirting some lube down there too.

Mentioed the noise to the garage that did the last service and just got the reply “cant hear anything mate” usual reply from someone who cant be bothered to take the time to investigate.

Have resorted to turning the radio up.  Solves a lot of noise issues I find

So if anyone has any suggestions will follow with interest

Hi

I wouldn’t personally spray silicone grease down there

basically because some plastics don’t like silicone it can make them worse

as already said I would also pull the cowl and have a look

it may be something to do with the clock spring for the steering wheel electrics As that’s obviously twisting all the time .

A while ago on a different car, the rustling noise turned out to be an old car-park ticket that had somehow migrated from inside the car to inside the column cowling.

We could not work out how, but judging by the date it had been in there for only a year or so, and was definitely one of ours…

Nice fix thou ??

Steering columns have top and bottom bearings. Lubrication will help.

Thanks everyone for your replies, looks like I’ll have to get the cowling off and investigate before doing anything.
