Squealing like fan belt when pulling away in 1st gear?

Hi all, 

Just bought a MK1, 1.6 (91) UK car that has developed a squeal when you pull away in 1st gear. Sounds like a fan belt BUT it continues regardless of engine temp… 

Any ideas?

Erm…so does a loose fan belt. Have you checked its condition and tension?

If its not the fanbelt it could be spigot bearing in flywheel but hopefully not

 A drop of washing up liquid on the fanbelt/pullies would quieten it to indicate if that is the source of the squeal.

Or a bit of chalk on the pulley and belt to see if it has slipped…
