just wonderd how many others got a problem with mx5 parts stainless system on a mk1?
sounded great to start with, but after just over 500 miles I noticed fibres all over the rear of the car…then this last coupla of days i noticed that its getting louder…to be honest im getting concerned its now anti social. why would the baffle material be getting blown out?
I read a few comments on the mx5parts ratings bit…others are having this problem too.
just wonderd if anyone had managed to get anything done about it or had any suggestions as what to do next? it cost around £180 so I was expecting no problems.
I’m on my second one as the first one buzzed and ticked at certain revs all of the time. This one only ticks when cold, but roars all of the time. Not noticed anything coming out of it other than steam (well tons of carbon when the stem seals and piston ring went)
They have offered to replace it, but i have to order and pay for a new system plus P&P, then have to pay for faulty silencer removing and new one fitting, and send it back. and then I “should” get my money refunded.
nice.
After 300 miles in 2 days I can honestly say im sick to death of the noise…its ruining the car for me (and others!) and I have little confidence that the replacement will last any better. (I too have the silenced de cat pipe)
maybe standard o/e spec parts are the way to go after all.
I have the same decat & system, plus a K&N cone. It’s one of these Marmite subjects. It was fun for two weeks, then it became an irritant, especially for a passenger. I’ll shortly be refitting the OEM airbox and fitting a K&N pad, keeping the cat by pass, but I have obtained a good condition OEM system to refit. It could be mine is excessive being an Auto as the manifolds are different. Frankly, a 57 years old driving an Auto Roadster doing a great sound impression on kickdown of an Aussie V8 supercar is just stupid! As it happens, an Auto 1840cc cruises at only 2,950 rpm @70mph…which is right bang on the “drone zone” It’s quieter at 60 mph or…so I’m told…80mph I have come to the conclusion that while selective modding can reap some benefits, if not to your wallet, there are some things best left alone.
I don’t think you will have an issue with refunds from my experiences. Mx5 Parts have a great reputation for customer service.
A de-cat pipe isn’t going to help here as the cat tends to slow and dull down the exhaust gasses.
I’ve had the MX5Parts cheapy dual exit exhaust system fitted for a couple of year now, with and without a decat pipe depending on what I’m doing with the car at the time, never seen any fibres and never had any issues. I hope and trust you just got a Friday afternoon one first time round.
Well…the good news is its still nice and quiet…just a lovely rasping burbly sound a bit like janspeeds used to sound.
why the stainless system? well…long story short i’m doing a rolling restoration/rebuild and its to keep long term, so thought that instead of just replacing the standard system and having to do it again in a couple of years or watever…a stainless one should see out my ownership period if not me!
plus i’m always interested in making things work better or more efficient. I always used to use janspeed stuff and they always lasted.
I’m noticing fibres on the back of the car, only a small covering but its there. I’m hoping that its just clearing its throat of crap and it wil still be sounding the same in six months time. The mx5 website has a few reports of this happening and then lots of noise…I hope it was a duff batch and my new one is not affected.
The fibres will probably be the internals of the silencer section slowly coming out which would make it louder. If it makes funny noises when cold then quietens down when hot then it has a crack or a loose fitting somewhere along it’s length which is sealed by heat expansion.
by way of an update: To mx5 parts credit they have done exactly as promised and refunded the cost of the new exhaust. was done very quickly and without quibble so hats off to them.
nice to know they will stand by their products if they go faulty.
(just hoping the replacment last a little longer,…)
I will keep an eye on mine then as i only fitted it today.
It does sound bloody lovely although is a lot quieter than i expected (still got cat atm though) id expect it to get a bit louder and pop and burble more after 500 miles or so as its "run in, especially without a cat. every other aftermarket exhaust ive ever fitted to a car has been similar. I used to love the sound my group N pugsport had on my little 106gti, really raspy and burbly (if thats a word!) sounded better from outside than inside though which is why i love the eunos as it sounds great with the top down.
The system seems very nicely made from the outside but maybe the packings not too good or the holes in it are a little large? If mine gets loud i will probably repack with stainless wool around the perforated pipe and then glasspack around that and reweld as we have a nice tig setup at work . After all though it is a very cheap exhaust system for a full stainless.
apologies for resurrecting this old thread, but i was just wondering if the replacement exhaust lasted any better. i think i have the exact same issue…
oh and apologies for the lack of capital letters, android phone browser…
