Thanks Joy!
I’ll give them a call.
Given them a ring, waiting for a price! Doesn’t sound like it is going to be cheap though.
Les, your Larini supplier hasn’t got back to me after I emailed him directly; noticed he hasn’t got anything at all listed on ebay at the moment; perhaps he has stopped trading?
Any other ideas of local suppliers you guys? All I want is a stainless system (probably cat back due to cost!). You know me; I don’t want anything raucous just nice and original although I’m not totally against a little rasp at the right moment!
If all else fails, Les keep your old one on standby - I’ll have to spend my pocket money on something else!
Have you tried MX5 Parts, or MX5 Mad? Other than that, there’s a place (well, there used to be anyway it may not be there anymore!) called 2xtreme just off the A127 that I went to when I drove my chavvy Fiesta! There is a place in Basildon somewhere too, but I can’t for the life of me remember where or what it’s called!!
Yes and also everythingmx5.com in Romford, they have second user parts. I guess Les’s is the cheapest and the sky is the limit from there.
You pays your money and take your choice.
Happy motoring
The prices are in and as Joy hinted the sky would, indeed, appear to be the limit!
Viper Exhausts S/S cat back £350-£370!!! But that is a custom made, hand built system and you even tell them what kind of noise you want it to make along with what shape you want your tail piece to be!
Sounds incedibly expensive BUT they give a lifetime guarantee and I don’t intend getting rid of the car for some considerable time and also Joy’s friend highly recommends the quality and workmanship and he is of an engineering background. Do fancy this as they sound really helpful on the phone (well, they would!) and have encouraged me to go along and talk with their technicians about exactly what I want in order for them to make my ‘bespoke’ system; you never get that at Kwik Fit!!!
To compare - rang a local exhaust supplier and for an ordinary, non S/Ssystem, I’m looking at £155; apparently they’re not cheap. Mid range seems to be the MX-5 Parts S/S system which I reckon will be about £220 delivered and fitted.
As Joy says above; you pays your money and take your choice or in my case I sit and ponder and get told what I’m allowed!!!
Will keep you posted.
Dandycars do larini but not cheap

Blimey! Perhaps £350ish is not too bad after all.
At £350 your getting close to the best “off the shelf” exhausts which are ss but also flow tested/designed etc.
I had a Larini and found it to be too raspy and not burbly if you get my drift. Too many around sound harsh and not melow.
keep an eye on ebay as you may find someone who is trading to a turbo exhaust if they have just fitted a turbo system as I did and get a near £500 exhaust with 3000 miles on it and only pay £200.
good luck with whatever you decide and nice to meet you the other day.
Jonathan
Virtually all stainless steel exhausts have a lifetime warranty on them (except imported Japanese and US items). However, in most cases,it is not transferrable (so a second hand system will have no warranty, unless you get the old owner to collude with you).
Why would you worry, you might ask. Stainless steel obviously doesn’t rust through, and generally the glass wool silencing material tends to stay put. But stainless steel welds can be brittle. Larini had a bit of an issue. I had to replace a Mongoose system, after a broken bracket on a backbox ripped a hole in it (the break exactly matched the weld). Collins Engineering (Mongoose) replaced that system, without fuss, back in 2002, with a totally redesigned system, and no issues ever since. It seems though that the old Mongoose design has cropped up on Pipedream exhausts. I’ve now had effectively the “same” exhaust on 3 different cars, over 11 years (transferred between vehicles). Cost was around £250 back then, and its still about the same.
Thanks for all the advice guys; and I thought choosing a new mobile phone contract was stressful!!!
Let us know what you decide Brian.
Good luck
Brian
Let me know if you decide to go and have a look at the made to messure system, i will come with you and they can see what i have got and what it sounds like.
Any decision yet Brian?
Dont know if this helps, but i bought a from cat back stainless steel exhaust from mx5 parts in April last year.
Price is good and quality seems to be good, havent had any problems.
It makes the car sound like a sports car should.
Fitting was easy, my son in law fitted it for me in less than an hour.[H]
Just a thought, following on from my previous reply.
Are you going to any mx5 events this year where mx5 parts are attending,
I bought my cat back stainless steel exhaust last year at the spring rally at Haynes motor museum from mx5 parts at a show price of £100,
Taken out of the box it fits in the boot.
Took it home and fitted later that day by my son in law.
Sounds brilliant [H]
Hadn’t considered that option Mike; yes we will be at the Spring Rally. I have, however, been to see Viper Exhausts and liked what I saw; price was confirmed as £350 fitted and I have to say I am currently lioking the sound of using them. Just like the sound of them fitting their sysytem with everything being covered by their warranty. It’s not that I am made of money - far from it! I simply like the idea of the complete package from one company with all angles covered.
Do I feel you are on the brink of a decision Brian!!!
Yes i understand where you are coming from about the peice of mind a gaurantee gives you, It is quite a big difference in price for a gaurantee though. There shouldnt be much to go wrong with an exhaust.
Is the price quoted for a whole system or from cat back?
Which ever one you choose you will love the difference it makes to the sound of the car.
