Stalling

Hi I recently got a mx5 1.6 litre from near egham, I drove her home without any issues (i did stall a couple of times but put it down to driver error!)

however yesterday i Drove to and from work no issues, went to the shops to buy some oil as I noticed the car was dry and within not even a mile I stalled Twice I put the oil in and within half a mile stalled about 10 times twice when I started it up!! I managed to get back home and stalled both when I went in first gear and again when I tried to reverse into a space.

I left the car parked for a couple of hours then returned to give it another go where I only stalled once!

revs does at times seem to drop between 7-8000 but I don’t even get the chance to try and increase them as it stalls!

Any suggestions please!!??

Does it tickover OK, around 800rpm.

Sitting at tickover. what happens if you blip the throttle.

Take it up to about 3000 rpm quickly and back off quickly, does it cut out or settle down and tickover around 800 rpm again.

It had been dropping to about 400 on my way home today it started stalling again, then i couldn’t get it into gear in the end I managed to get it into first and had to rev it slightly excessively to prevent it from lurching forwards and stalling again, I couldn’t change gear and it’s now parked/ dumped in the garage stuck in first gear where it also stalled into the space

Tickover should be steady around 750-850rpm.

What model do you have, I believe 1.6 was available on MK1 and Mk2.

Someone will be along shortly to advise how to adjust the tickover.

I can’t comment on it being stuck in first gear at this stage.

It’s a mark 2, as for the gear someone has suggested that possibly the Master/slave clutch cylinder has knackered!???

Hi mate,

Sorry to hear about the 5 stalling hope you get it sorted soon !

I’m having similar issues at the moment but when slowing down at junctions revs drop way to low and cuts out. I’m trying a couple of things this weekend so if I have any luck i will let you know as it may work for you.

I’ve also attempted to set up the base idle but cant get it below 1k it dont let me turn it anymore! I’ve got a feeling this is my issue so might be worth a bash it only takes 2 minutes and very simple.

Cheers Josh

I had similar on mk mk2, turned out to be the coil packs (very common). Replaced with aftermarket and problem sorted…

Thank you all of you, I’ve now booked jasmine (that’s what the previous owner called my car!) into the garage unfortunately they can’t see it till Tuesday next week :frowning: i’ll Call the aa to take her down there as it’s still stuck in first gear and I’m not going to start  incase it jumps and hits the wall in the garage! I’ll update when I find out exactly what’s wrong incase anyone else has the same issues!

Alright mate,

How did you get on at the garage ? Hope they got it sorted for you.

Cheers Josh

Sorry for not responding earlier, Jasmine is back home and it turned out to be the Master cylinder after all! She drives like a dream to the point everyday this week I’ve been out cruising in her and managed to get to a couple of events!

I know she drives well as ive had both  partner and my daughter in her, both have fallen in love with the MX5’s now with my partner after many years of driving a work van has now decided and started searching for one for himself hoping to get the same as me!!

Nice one mate glad you got it sorted out! Enjoy the car and hopefully the weather will improve for you!
