Steam Clean & Waxoyl

My MX-5 has a bit of surface rust on the sub frame and I have been considering getting it steam cleaned and given a Waxoyl ( or similar) treatment. Has anyone out there done this recently and if so what was the cost? Thanks

Hi mate

I had the underbody of my mark 2 treated at Dandy cars in Ilford Essex . They had the car 3 or 4 days, they pressure washed, descaled  and undersealed it.I’m pleased with the results £190 and that was a year ago in may. hope this helps.

Cheers Paul.

I had my mk1 rustproofed at Rustbuster Spalding last year

Check out their website

£390 for full Dinitrol hot fog treatment, underbody, sills, doors, wings etc

Very thorough

regards

Mark

Cost vary from a quick clean and spray the underneath with goo up to removing wheel arch protectors, steam clean, rubbing down any rusted areas, rustconverter, paint then put on protecting sheeting in key areas and putting on the goo.

The first job at a garage is under £200, the complete job around £400.

If you only keep a car for say two years do the cheap way. If the car is a long term keeper then do the full job.

Only you can decide

Have you considered doing it yourself ?

I’ve only recently bought my MX5, and haven’t done much to it yet.

However, I’ve used Waxoyl for years on almost every car I’ve owned.

Once I’ve done the job, every year in the autumn  I go around underneath and check for any areas that

might need freshening up. Typically, I’ll slap some more around the wheelarches.

I love the smell of Waxoyl in the morning ! Laughing

Many thanks to all who replied. Given that there are undertrays fitted I had only intended to arrange for a bit of a “spruce up” to the exposed sub frame components rather than a full treatment so I’ll be looking to the cheaper end of the estimates. As for doing it myself - as I only have a trolley jack and a couple of axle stands this might be something to attempt second time around after having it done professionally first time around.

Again thanks for your replies…happy motoring!

Hi I was talking to Mazda Menders at the NEC yesterday about this matter.

They suggested DIY if you have access to a compressor/ gun applicator ( I think you can hire them?) and a couple of cans or the “wax oil” but a cannot remember the name.

They advocated this method rather than powder coat but as always its the preparation that is key to a good job and that is what will take the time.

I’m looking for a good low mile Sport Black if anyone hears of one.
