HI any ideas i have a mk3 56 plate have a clicking sound when turning left and right notice it more when on full lock and parking has been back to dealer few times to be sorted and as yet not been fixed its going back on monday to have yet another look under warrenty at mo which is only gd thing ) any ideas out their ???
Click (from inside cabin) or “twang” (from somewhere) - the latter might be a broken spring, very common these days though I haven’t seen one mentioned on the MX5 forums. Spring snaps, usually at top top somewhere, broken-off bit can get stuck up there! May or may not result in suspension drop depending on which bit has broken off.
Has the car been nicked/attempted nicked at some stage? - I had a cavalier where this had happened, tealeaves forced the steering wheel round to break the lock, causes damage to steering column etc where replacement lock can catch on a bit of bent metal if column not replaced as well as lock.
Or could just be a bush …
It could be the wheel bearing on it’s way out and only making the noise under pressure? but that would be a click ,click, click as the wheel goes round, is it just the one noise when you first put lock on?
M-m
only making clicking sounds when at low speed and turning car only done ten thousand miles recorded and all history me secound owner got from main dealer last august lucky its under warrenty but this be third time it been back .so hope it gets sorted.last time they replaced some sort of brake disc guard at back of disc brakes on front as they said it was broken and rusty and it seemed to stop for a week or so but now it back and worse than ever
i will mention all that to dealer on monday thanks for all the ideas .all as far as i no car not been in a crash or stolen checks were taken out by dealer and have paper work to prove.it allso handles fine just a clicking sound when turning at low speed in both direction when nearly on full lock only notice when parking
cv joint produced a clicking noise for me on my last car when steering left and right.
many thanks are put that on list for them to check hopefully with all thease ideas it will get sorted
I guess that was a front-wheel drive car?
good point
Just looked in my Haynes manual - never occurred to me that there would be CV joints on the rear-end - oops
hi all took car back to dealer today but they were unable to find the fault in the 1 hour time solt they had gave me today but they admit their a problem .so its going back on friday for the day to give a proper going over fingers crossed its sorted but expect it will go back a again cos they never keep parts in stock
hi all at last the clicking sound on the steering has been sorted on monday by the main dealer under warrenty it was the clips that hold the brake pads in so i have been told new brake pads ect fitted and no more clicking so fingers crossed
thats good then, glad its sorted
Glad I was able to find this discussion. My 2007 mk3 is exhibiting a click that fits that exact description - only on full lock (or close to) and only as you turn and then turn back, not as the wheel rotates. It’s very quiet, I almost thought it was in the cabin. I only notice it when parking, as you say, and driving around the multi storey at work where it’s very quiet and there’s a lot of nearly full lock corners.
The car is new to me, I collected it last week and they replaced the front pads before I picked it up so it’s all pointing in the same direction…
hi yes had the problem for some time and kept having to take car back to dealer for it to be sorted kept telling me it was the clips that hold brake pads in touchwood its sorted now but allways listening to see if its coming back lol hope your able to get it sorted
I had this same noise, like a stone hitting the windscreen when turning.
Mine turned out to be the driver’s seat being pushed right back and the clicking was actually from the headrest! Bizarre but true.
Just thought it was worth posting as a cross-check for this clicking noise
