Hi I have a momo mini steering wheel, rota wheels 15", toyo tyres(6 months old), tyre pressure ok, bilstein suspension 18mth old, but when I am driving on the motorway or road (I might be imagining it) but when I hit a slight bump the wheels or steering seem to want to jump to the right or left slightly. I have power steeing and the fluid is ok, but just feel sometimes too much play in the wheel. Not sure what it is.
First I thought it was tyre pressure last month and I checked tyre pressure and only down slightly so upped psi a bit and it was fine, but sometimes feel as if I am driving a car that wants to go out of control. Is this normal?
I also had all four wheels aligned by a good garage in bolton in june £80 it was and it made a massive difference so it can’t be that?
How small is the sterring wheel ? that will make it feel more twitchy… they take getting used to, and need more concentration than a larger wheel in my experience…
A) Offset of wheels could be making a difference. I believe that can induce the ‘bump steer’ that you’re describing
B) How new are the tyres? Can take some time to scrub them in and get rid of all the release agent, so they may not be giving their best grip yet.
C) Agreed that the front lip spoiler plants the front end better at motorway speeds. Without it you can get lift and a ‘floaty feeling’ at the front end as you describe.
The wheels were aligned by Nigel Lang in Bolton in June or July. the rota wheels and toyo tyres are fairly new six months old. what is a afront lip spoiler??? Today some stupid guy changed his mind from one lane to the other at last minute, I braked and my wheels turned to the right after sliding when I braked hard. Just feels like its on ice all the time.
The roads are very slippy/greasy at the moment. My car felt like it was glued to the road in summer, but today I found I was having to be very careful on corners and roundabouts as it was sliding about a bit. Maybe your car is just so well-aligned now that you are ‘feeling’ the road a lot more than you would in a normal car, and it is making you nervous? That is what I have noticed since I had a 5 - that I have slowed down a lot in general as I am more aware of the speed I am going and how close to the limit I am getting - I think in a spongy hatchback you are shielded from that until disaster strikes! In my car the steering wheel really feels it and passes it on to me if a pothole jolts one wheel to the right or left for example - and I have a newish car with recent WIM alignment.
2-3" deep mini-spoiler that fits along the bottom edge of the front bumper. Has a brake-cooling duct at either side. usually satin black but can be body coloured.
