Call Justin 07756127557 tell him you are a MX5OC member.
Be aware not all cats get that price, if you can give him the code of the flange he will tell you the value. Seems honest, transfers direct to your bank, then waits to check it has gone through.
Thanks Chris:)
Thanks for the reply Enjoyabull - I shall have a look at what the code is. The car’s been in the family almost 20 years so I’ve tried to keep it going and may decide to persevere, but it is now really very rusty so this may just tip the scales. It’s sad that the cars are seemingly made out of recycled biscuit tins when Mazda appear to put so much effort into the mechanical side.
Most biscuit tins in our Tesco seem to have better paint.
And…are “tinned” for anti rot!
Yes the rust thing is just about the only way to get rid of an MX5.
Here is a replacement CAT for £50 with 12 months warranty.

Anyone try something like this? If I still had my NB I reckon I would sell the original cat and replace it with this.
Might not stop it being stolen, but at least the money would be in my pocket and the thieves would be disappointed when they tried to sell it on.
Hmm, how would a would-be thief know that? You could still end up with a damaged car!
That’s true, but the thief will only have got away with a cheapo cat, as Enjoyabull has already pocketed the excess value of his £1,000 cat. He could probably repair and replace the cheap cat several times over and still be in profit.
I do wonder though: when the thieves squirm under a car and find an aftermarket cat, do they leave it as it’s not worth much or do they take it anyway? They appear to target specific models so they know what they’re looking for and probably quickly learn to spot the valuable types.
I also wonder what the sills look like after a high lift trolley jack placed centrally has shoved it up 18 inches. Potentially enough to write one off?
Did you really get that much?
Apparenrly Prius and Prius-related cars are targeted for the most valuable cats. 78% of claims are for Honda/Toyota/Lexus hybrids.
My supposition is they will cut first, and ask questions later. The problem with “pre-stealing” your own cat is you can’t depend on a cooperative thief who will cut at a mutually convenient point (unless you paint on the underside in big red letters “please cut here”", assuming they read), and, as pointed out hoping the theives don’t crush a sill, cut through a brake line or other such damage. Pre-empting the theft probably encourages it more.
Thieves aren’t partcularly considerate. My father had the wheels stolen off his Mondeo when it sat on the drive. They didn’t even leave it on bricks for him. They’re opportunists. Besides the cat, a MX5 would also present a tempting target for someone with a big screwdriver. If that cat looks worthless, there might be something tempting inside. Of course, they have to get inside to check if there is anything worth stealing. Even a recce will result in £500 of damage.
Because the sports cat is obviously bright round, shiny and worth £20 scrap. These thieves are not fools the would not waste their time.
True, but that doesn’t guarantee that they wouldn’t damage the car whilst checking, or purely out of spite. You’re relying on the thief’s attitude being, “No valuable Cat! Oh dear! How sad! Never mind!”.
I agree. May a sign on the lower door saying “The cat has already been taken”.
Thats assuming that the low-life can read
Good point.
They might also think its a ruse to fool them.
“No cats are left under this vehicle at night.”
That will go well with my “No welding gear left in the car overnight”.
