Stop/start

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __nd 2019
  2. I’m based near: __chard
the past couple of days I have noticed that the stop start function is not working. I am not overly bothered as I am not a big fan of stop start I always turn it off when I remember. I was just wondering if I need to be concerned will it affect anything else by not having it working.

You can check what is causing the stop/start not to work by finding the correct screen in the centre display. If it is the battery then disconnect the negative terminal on the battery for 20 minutes and then reconnect. This has always worked for me. You will only lose some ‘trip’ data.

It also depends on how much you are driving useing the car, mine stands in the garage sometimes for couple of weeks or a little more,it can then take up to 50 miles for the battery I assume to be totally charged again, then all of a sudden it just starts working again, then no problems at all until it is left standing for another long period.

I suppose it could be the battery cars coming up to five years old only gets used for short journeys during the week three to four miles a day would five years be about right for the life of the battery

just a thought if it does need a new battery can I just replace it myself my previous car a BMW had to be programmed by a main dealer

No reprograming required.

If the battery is still starting the car easily then it is OK.
You can buy a battery tester for a few pounds that will tell you how 'good ’ it is.
A smart charger is also a good investment.
Try my ‘fix’, it will cost nothing and may cure the issue.

thanks I will have a look tomorrow

…had the same problem on my old Yeti…replaced the battery and it worked fine.
We have an ND2…no start start that I am aware off…??

If you have an ND2 it will have stop start.
:hearts:

…well, in 4+ years of ownership I can confirm it has NEVER “stop/started”…thankfully…

I am surprised it’s never worked in four years there must be a fault with the car somewhere

…well there is no means of turning it off?? (Had a button on the Yeti…)…

…and if there is a fault, I don’t want it fixed!!!

What defines “ND2”, really I-Stop didn’t arrive until ND3 if we’re using internet designations.

Not as far as I know, mine sometimes works, others not. It’s easy to “break” it, simply attach a trickle charger (CTEK or similar) and the sensor for stop/start voltage reference and battery voltage reference get out of step. If you don’t recalibrate, stop/start will probably not work. Mine mysteriously started working for a while after a 400 mile run and then stopped working again a couple of months later once I attached a CTEK as it wasn’t being used for a couple of weeks.

Resetting/recalibrating is easyish to do, just a bit of a palaver.

Mine is a 2018 ND with istop, thought it was an ND2

…mine does not have the “Istop” system fitted…so I do not have stop/start…

As far as the internet is concerned it’s an ND2 from what I gather but there were a few mild changes before 2018. Clear rear fog lamp as opposed to red and direct TPMS as opposed to indirect.

Ultimately it’s down to VIN serial number. Without knowing the last 6 of Stubods VIN we don’t know what spec their MX-5 is.

If you have the heated seats on I’ve not managed to get the stop/start to kick in.

In general terms I would suggest that ND2 became ‘live’ with the major changes to the engine when the power of the 2.0l went up significantly.(and the 1.5 slightly) I understand from my collection of brochures that i-loop and i-stop was introduced at the same time.

stubod would appear to have the lower powered model so is ND1.
