Straight-through exhaust for Mazda MX5

 Hi MX5 owners.

This might be a message from t’other side. I am a long term owner of an MGF (Booo!) and as with all MGF owners I have an unusual hobby. I design performance exhausts.

I develped a straight-through exhaust for the MGF called the TT (see www.tt-exhausts.co.uk) . It is very successful and the only straight-through exhaust you can get for an F/TF

Now I am looking into making a straight through performance exhaust for the 98-2005 MX5. As yet I have not found one for the MX5 they all seem to be chambered which brings with it an array of issues.

Is there anybody in the Surrey Area who would like to be part of that experiment?

If so email me on neil.willetts@neilwilletts.com

G’day mate, welcome to the forum

Ah the first step into the land of the converted, stay here for a while, and put the 'F up for saleWink

Is the Milltek back-box for the Mk2 not a straight-through design?

It looks like they only make one for  the 2005-onward model which could be straight-through but it would involve a horrible T junction in the middle of the back box.

So I suspect that this system is not straight-through at the back box. The centre section is though. I bet this is very expensive though.

I am looking at doing a rear box for the 1998-2005 system.

One that will create a fullsome deep sound

I was looking at this on the Moss Europe web site.

Yeah that looks to be straight through but you can never be too certain as the silencer is large and would suit a chambered design better.

This image looks to be for the earlier Mk1MX5 Eunos model?

Also the prices are a lot higher than the prices I am aiming for

If ya wana knock one up and send it to me in Shropshire I will try it out for ya and give you an honest opinion…Wink

What do you mean “No Way” Cry

Its all for research…Thumbs up

Try the PlanetMX5 forum, most of us are in and around Surrey.

Sounds very nice Neil, what sort of db numbers is it puting out, also are you looking to do just a twin outlet or will you be doing a single outlet as well. Would definately be interested for my MK2 (1999)  unfortunateley I`m up in Yorkshire otherwise you could have used mine, What sort of price is the MG one .

Mikey

I am currently looking at at single outlet for a good price.  ~£200 so it will be competitive with other MX5 mass produced exhausts. The TT Mk4/3 for MGTF sells for £290 but it is a twin pipe system.

dB varied significantly dependent on throttle and revs. About 98dB. at 4000rpm but only 80dB  at 3000rpm at tickover it’s very subtle, just a deep beefy rumble sound.

The TT has the reputation for being a thunderous exhaust but I don’t think it’s that loud. If you drive the car with your foot down it’s a lot louder than if you just drive normally.

I have driven my MGF for 12 years with the first ever TT Mk1 and I have had no problem with the Police or at MOT time even with main dealers.

Here is an image of the rare single outlet version I did for the MGTF. This one is a TT MK3R for race MGTFs and sort of what I aim to produce if there is enough interest here.

And is in the original spirit of what I am trying to acheive, an exhaust that makes a sports car sound like a sports car

And here is the twin version on a car.

MGF and TF owners were VERY happy with their purchases, second hand ones swap hands for MORE than the new price!

So I thought I might do one for the MX5 if there is enough interest.

It’s just a daft hobby but  I get a lot of satisfaction out of producing these and the reaction of the owners when they put the thing on their cars and start them for the first time

check out this youtube…it’s from Germany

And this one from France.

also have a look at the website www.tt-exhausts.co.uk

You see working for Volvo for years sort of affects you this way!!

Thanks Neil, I`m sure there will be plenty of interest on here and other MX clubs (Nutz etc) you can definately put me down for one if you are doing a single outlet version, one of the reasons I asked about db figure was as a few of us do track days and some circuits limit  to 98db although a lot are 105db usually @4500 rpm thanks for the info look forward to seing the finished product if you go ahead. perhaps anyone interested can add their name on here ??

Hi Mike yes I am developing this so we speak

As ever manufacturers seem to make chambered exhausts.

This is so that they can really cut down the noise BUT  it means that the apperature left under the car for the silencer isnt often reguarly suited to the fitment of a straight through exhaust.

So I aim to have made an exhaust which looks chambered and will the aperture for an MX5 BUT will be actually straight through.

The sheer amount of sound deadening space around the perf pipe should allow for quite a degree of silencing so it wont be as loud as some of the I have created.

Here is an idea.

Of course it’ll be beautifully polished and would have a bolt on finisher for those who want one.

I just need to find somebody with a 98-05 Mk2 Mazda Mx5 who would be interested to acquire such a thing and be part of the development process

TT Mk5 idea

Looks a very  simple design Im suprised nobody else has done it !! Im supprised nobody has offered their car for you to work on,  you could always get a train up to yorkshire and borrow mine for a few weeks !!! just the price of a train ticket and a free exhaust . Then drop it back and get the train home Big SmileBig SmileBig Smile

Mike

I know those roads very well, looks like he just came off the ferry!

Any plans to develop for the Mk1?

Am I right in thinking that the Mk1 is very similar to the Mk2?

I am concentrating on the Mk2 for the mo but I managed to get the TT Mk4 for MGF to fit early MGFs and the later MGTFs inc the Chinese NAC MGTFs

Come-on there’s got to be somebody up for being a guinea pig to test the system in Surrey!

www.mx5nutz.com seems to be down also

Yeah theres a topic on mx5nutz - server problems requiring rebuild from backups or something.

I imagine the exhausts are similar…

Similar Neil but not the same , entry pipe into backbox is a different angle, not sure if the hangers and actual dimension are different.

Mike

 Thanks Mike

So that fixes that. It’ll be for the mk2/2.5 from 98 to 05

And it’ll be all sheeny and shiney AND straight through.

Oh and price leading

I have sent the prototype straight-through exhaust to the manufacturer so I will have a couple  of prototypes coming very soon.

They will make a really robust sound

Anybody interested in being part of this?  I will sell the exhausts for £175 each
