Strange gearbox issues

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2013 MX5 Sport Tech 2.0 PRHT
  2. I’m based near: Bedfordshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Gear changing issues under certain conditions.

Hi all,

I’ve recently purchased and NC3 and having some peculiar issues with the gearbox. As most NC owners have reported, the change from 1st to 2nd isn’t great when cold and there is a notchiness to shifts but that was expected.

My issue is that after driving for about 20/25 minutes and/or driving in stop start traffic, all of a sudden it becomes very difficult to shift into first (or any gear) when the car is stopped. I do manage to get it in eventually after using some force but it is a very stiff change. Once I’m moving again the shifting is fine. When I go back out to drive a few hours later, all seems fine both when stopped and moving.

I will get this checked out by a mechanic soon but was wondering if any of the possible solutions I’ve found online are worth trying?

  • Clutch pedal adjustment
  • Gearbox oil change (However oil was changed about 250 miles ago with Redline oil)
  • Reverse gear lockout plate (will change this eventually anyway) and shifter turret oil
  • Clutch bleed and fluid change
  • Clutch pedal mount assembly replacement
  • Gear linkage check
  • Full clutch replacement with master and slave cylinder.

Any advice or your experiences would be really helpful

Thanks!

Hi , check fluid reservoir is not over full. Is another thing to check.

I had a similar problem last summer. I’m stop start traffic when hot, it was very difficult to engage gears.
Failing slave cylinder was the problem - but I had the clutch replaced at the same time as it was showing signs of wear,

I spoke to the dealer and he is willing to replace the slave cylinder and clutch as he spoke to mechanic who suggested it may fix the issue. Fingers crossed!!

2 years ago, I had the same issue and replaced the slave cylinder. It sorted the problem completely.

You did very well to get them both at the same time. Normally, they would do the slave cylinder and see how it went.
Good luck and hope it all works out,(should do).
From an owner the same as yours. :+1:

Ditto. Swapping out slave cylinder is a different league to swapping out the clutch. Might be worth clarifying that discreetly.

Any solution yet?

My car is booked in for a new clutch and slave cylinder next week. Hopefully it fixes the issue, will update with the results once it’s all done :slightly_smiling_face:

If you bought the car recently and they changed the gear oil before handing it over you’ve got to query which oil did they put in? Incorrect grade can I believe give notchy gear changes, 75w 90 to GL 4 spec is the stuff you should have in. Plus you didn’t say how many miles the car has done.

Whoops you’re right. The car’s done about 84,000 miles but did have full main dealer history.

I will query about the oil used as well but I was told he contacted Bofi racing for advice so I’m hoping it was the correct spec but yes I’ll double check :+1:

I’ve been having a similar problem with my 5 speed NC at the moment, gearshift is really rough and needs a lot of effort to get it to go into gear (especially reverse), I’ve rebuilt the shifter with new components, fitted a 5x racing bronze bushing and adjusted the clutch free play it’s made it a bit better but reverse is still a pig to get into. It’s going in this week to get a newly refurbished slave cylinder fitted and red-line oil put into the gearbox. Hopefully this’ll fix the problem otherwise I’m probably looking at a new clutch assembly.

If that is the case also check if the engine’s rear main seal is weeping a bit of oil into the clutch and causing drag.
