Strange MX5

Not sure what to make of this. Look very carefully. You will experience a Whoah moment. I didn’t think this was possible.

PRHT with NA nose-cone, front wings and cut and shut NC bonnet?

Yep, two of them.

I wonder if the headlamps actually retract.

Looking more closely you can just see the flow discontinuity, I think it’s where they cut the front off an NC wing and the back off the NA wing, about quarter of the way round the wheel arch.

I was wondering about the headlamps too, there’s a bit too much going on underneath with a UK NC nearside to make it easy. But offside maybe?

Just in case there is any doubt where these are;

So the liveried one (a third one?) can be seen with the barn doors parked. But what is going on with those headlamps?

They appear to be in Shenzhen, with registrations in PRC (blue plates) and Hong Kong (vaguely UK style plates). I suspect the reason why they did this is because NA MX5s were never sold in China, and consequently are illegal, or extremely difficult to import. In HK, the NA was sold there, and the SAR still retains UK-style laws, so JDM imports are no issue. But you can’t get HK cars registered in China, because, SAR. When I was last there, I noticed a fair few cars sporting both Chinese and Hong Konger plates, so I suspect a fair few peope have a place over the border as well, and it just eases things. I see the same in Thailand; cars with both Malaysian and Thai plates (generally really cool cars). Unfortunately, that doesn’t appear to be a loophole I can exploit to get my MX5 over there,

The clearly visible 5-stud wheel seems to indicate these are NCs, rather than NAs with grafted on NC bits.
