Strange play in suspension?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ND RF
  2. I’m based near: __Yorkshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __

Hi,

I have noticed a strange feeling in the suspension where it seems to be giving a feeling of moving and not being set/stable. After a while everything becomes solid again and I also note I can feel these tremors through the steering wheel. It is a very odd feeling. Almost as if the suspension is alive and moving. Tremor like and quite a strange sensation. It seems to be coming from the rear. I know it sounds odd and weird but something is for sure there. I honestly thought I had a puncture on the rear side today. This happens always when the car is started and running for the first 10 minutes or so but then everything seems to weight up correctly later on.

What is going on and does anyone have similar experiences with the MX5 ND?

Thanks.

I’m not an ND owner but have noticed since having an mx5 that people post about the rear bushes on ND cars being updated to a spherical type on that model and are known to wear out prematurely, sometimes resulting in knocking or possibly binding issues. Maybe this is what you are experiencing.

I’m sure someone will be along shortly to explain it better. :+1:

I am getting this knocking noise too. Loud thuds over only certain types of bumps/potholes in the road.

Hopefully someone can offer their thoughts?

New spherical bearings (2 per side) are available from Andy Leslie will cure the knocking noise. Mazda don’t sell the bearings separately you have to buy the whole rear hub.

I thought you purchased the car from a Mazda dealer so you should be taking it back there to have all your perceived issues sorted out free of charge under the warranty.

From the number of posts indicating different issues and concerns it would appear that you have a rouge car and should be returning it immediately.

I told you about Roddisons some time ago, have you been? Did you have your diff oil changed?

Hi,

The diff oil has been changed. I was surprised at how black it was. Only done 11,200 miles but nearly a seven year old car. I did not do the smell/feel test as I was unaware at the time but was told the old diff oil was filled to the correct level and that there were no metal shavings in the old oil. I got it done by Mazda as someone at that dealership spent a lot of time with me over email discussing the differential oil but also other issues so had to go there.

I don’t think this issue (spherical bearings) will count under the Mazda warranty right? Because this is a wear and tear item?
