Strange rubbing sensation when steering is hard locked left or right

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2008 NC
  2. I’m based near: _liverpool, Formby
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: turning circle, feels like rubbing

This might be hard to explain. Whenever i do a hard lock to left or right (forward or reversing). I get the sensation that front wheels are rubbing, or possibly not gripping.

Front tyres are Dunlop Sport BluResponse 205/50/16

Has anyone experienced this?

I should have asked about this while at the club meet and ask others if they have experienced it or could try driving mine to see if it happens to them.

What are the wheels on the car?

16” 205/50 87v Dunlop Sport BluResponse (front) Dunlop Sport Maxx rear

Wheels, not tyres

Factory alloys that came with the car.

First job is to have a look at the wheel arch liners to see if there are any ‘witness’ marks on them.

My tyres seem to “skip” on full lock, when I turn the car around on full lock in my road. I sometimes hear a chirp from the tyres. I think it is the tyres “scrubbing” on full lock or something like that.

It has done the same with other cars I have owned, so am not particularly bothered by it.

If yours is doing it forwards and reverse, you might need an alignment?

The magic words are “Ackerman Steering”.

No car is perfect, but some compromises might make matters better or worse.

Doing it on both. It could possibly need aligning.

Hi, i think i have experienced the same on my NC1, on full lock moving forwards (exiting a tight parking space) it almost felt like the tyres were dragging (not rotating). But this is very occasional and doesn’t happen often. Did you find the answer for what is causing this? I have doubts that my alignment is off so I am banking on visiting a garage to check the alignment, did you have any luck after the alignment?

I didn’t. However, I recently changed the tyres and I’ve not experienced it since. But then again, I might not be doing a full hard lock.
