Strut braces ND 1

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ND 2017 2.0 Litre
  2. I’m based near: __South Yorkshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __

Hi,

Does anyone think strut-braces will make a large difference to the feel and handling on the MX5 ND? I am thinking of having some added. I understand there are four types, rear, mid and lower front plus tower strut brace in the engine bay.

I don’t think I want to pay for all four so which would give me the most immediate benefit and feeling? I could perhaps choose two and maybe it should be front/rear?

With regards to makes/brands IL motorsport/Superlight and Ultra racing are the ones to go for?

Thanks.

You have the RF I think?

Are you planning to track day it or indulge in some form of motorsport (would be interested to see how an RF does in those circumstances)?

Personal opinion I think you would be wasting your time and money, your car your money though.

Read this thread: ND Strut Brace

It strays into underbody bracing towards the end.

I should add that I have an Ultra Racing Front Upper Strut Brace so I can access the adjustment for my MeisterRs. That’s the only reason I have it: the OEM one doesn’t let you access adjustable shocks.

My car has them all, but unfortunately I fitted them all at the same time along with coilovers whilst the car was SORN during covid, so I therefore couldn’t comment on what was the best improvement. But from what I’ve seen from others its been suggested that the lower braces make the bigger difference, I’m sure Paul Roddison advises as far as he is concerned the upper front brace makes no difference at all.

Thanks guys.

Yes I have the RF. It is an auto too.

I don’t think it is too different from the standard non-RF MX5 ND track wise. Just the additional weight of the auto and of course electric roof. I think the rear/front balance is slightly different and some different suspension tuning (for softness?).

But there is a major difference in the differential. It is open not limited slip-differential and this makes me wonder whether it is advisable to put more power through the rear wheels, with an engine upgrade for instance.

So for now I am looking at what I can do to make it handle better.
