Sub in boot

MK3 Sport

When my youngest moved out, she left behind an Edge sub woofer.
I tried once to fit it in the boot and found that it doesn’t fit.
Today the Mrs is having a clear out, so I tried again, and actually, fitted upside down it does fit.
It leaves very little space though, so forget travel or shopping.

For obvious reasons, I’ve considered just a temporary fit to see how I get on with it.
But even a temporary fit is going to take some effort getting power and audio to it, so before I go to the lengths of stripping the interior apart, has anyone fitted a sub in the boot, and is it worth it.

These cars have little enough boot. Why would you want to remove what there is?

Plenty options for under seat subwoofers if that’s your bag.

But let’s be fair, with the roof up you hear sod all, with the roof down, you hear Sod all. The mx5 is a terrible environment for sound. So I Can’t imagine it’s worth the effort.

I have the Bose system in my NC2 and the 10” door subwoofers are surprisingly effective (I run a high end audiophile system at home). But there are two problems.

  1. with roof down, you can’t hear anything above 50mph
  2. with roof up, everyone else in the street and road hears everything you’re listening to
  3. again with roof up, see point 1!
  4. isn’t the point of mx5 to be minimalist and light.

In case it’s not evident, I REALLY don’t think is worth it

Appreciate the comments.
The more i looked at it, the more i realised it wasnt such a great idea, so i decided against it.

Good thinking, best to leave subs on the bench where they belong!!!

In my NC I can easily hear music above 50mph. And while I do think road noise etcetera interferes with sound I absolutely find my music sounds better with my upgrades. Yes you don’t get the best from the components due to noise but there is a definite improvement to be heard.

Subwoofers in MX5’s is just silly if you ask me due to a seperated boot from the cabin and the lack of storage space. I’m not considering some really nice custom solutions that I have seen online utilizing space behind/between chairs to fit a sub in the cabin. In my NC I have used 8" woofers in the doors. I don’t really miss a subwoofer now, not with rap, not with house etcetera. Only drum and bass reveals the lack of a sub but my speakers still cover 80+ percent of the bassline.
