Suggested route through Southern Scotland

If you are bored of the Motorway by the time you get into Scotland. The M74 becomes 2 lane after Junction 12 and has a good deal of heavy Traffic.

Leave the Motorway at M74 Junction 15 and follow the A701

A great road over the hils long sweeping bends and a fast a road

Arrive Pitlochry

or as alternative M6 J44 - A7 all the way to Edindurgh via Selkirk & Galashiels

I live not far from the A7 at Longtown and would still rather use the A701

Use one going up other coming back

A701 (Edinburgh Scenic Route) is a great road, come off the M74 at Moffat, which is a lovely place to stretch the legs. I used to cut across to the A702 at West Linton.

I have used the A701 nearly everytime I have gone up to Edinburgh and the East Coast, great road, even better when you get to know it really well Wink Watch the villages though I got mobile camera zapped twenty years ago £130 and five points to show for it Cry

Will be using it for the Spring Rally as going up the East before Pitlochry.

Another point you may want to take note of

Junction 43 Tesco got towards Carlisle less than 1/2 mile cheap fuel and super

Junction 44 Asda even cheaper fuel  follow A689 west (new rd) to next roundabout and turn right again within 1/2 mile of motorway

Another good route to break up the journey is to come off the M74 at Junction 12 onto the  A70 s/p Rigside follow to Carstairs, turn left onot A721 approx 3 miles then turn right onto A706 s/p Forth then follow road to Whitburn follow signs for M8 S/p  Edinburgh go over the Forth bridge s/p Perth and Inverness.

At Perth go A9 to Pitlochry. When heading south wether in our motorhome,Mx5 or previously on my motorcycle we have always used this road to break up the journey south,

. It’s a great bike or Mx5 bit of road distance from Junction 12 to Rally field in Pitlchry 103 miles !! just the road to wake you up after a stint on the boring motorway.

Whichever route you choose drive safe and enjoy.look forward to seeing you all at the rally
