I am hoping to buy an MX5, probably a later Mk 3 hardtop/coupe (say 2010 onwards). I’m in no hurry & initial research suggests December as a good time to buy as its winter (no time to be buying a convertible!) & dealers will be keen to shift cars being end of quarter. Does anyone know by how much MX5 prices are depressed in the winter - and is there still a good selection of MX5’s on the market then? In short - is it worth the wait?
I don’t think dealers give much off prices of MX-5’s even in winter. They most likely don’t want to take a part ex in (MX-5) at that time either so will offer maybe even less.
Best place to look, well you’re here, a members car and especially anytime between late Feb through to May. I’ve seen loads put up for sale on this site alone and more than likely good ones well looked after, prices will be better too for most.
I believe you need to be a paid up member to buy and sell, so if you aren’t get signed up and start the search.
I check the (alleged) value of mine on WeBuyAnyCar from time to time, each year the value in January’s quoted at between £1,500 & £1,900 lower than the value quoted in the following May.
I’ve been monitoring the convertible (particularly MX5) market now for about four years at my local BCA auction whilst I visit most weeks and have established that it appears that the cheapest time to buy at auction is mid September and into October. There are a glut of cars usually at that time due to end of summer and change of plate beginning of September. Come April and May all prices are inflated for the obvious reasons. You should find that these times reflect the traders highest and lowest prices, but traders are not silly and some will just buy low and hold for that extra premium in the following high season and hope someone will come along and buy thinking the prices are lower before the season starts.
A sports car dealer once told me that demand was always good in January and February because buyers expected prices to be depressed. Who reduces prices when demand is high? Certainly not car dealers!
Many thanks for the advice, some good pointers there. looking round the site it looks like the MX5 rally in September may be an ideal time to find out a lot more. Thanks for the tip on possibly buying from someone in the club - I guess it would be more likely that the car had been well looked after.
The best time and place to buy a good MX5 is in the dead of winter from a private seller, who brings it out of a nice dry garage to show you the car, if it’s parked on a damp salt ridden road i wouldn’t even look at it.
But that’s just me…
