Supercharged NC Tyre Choice

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC Mk3.5 BBR Supercharged
  2. I’m based near: York
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Tyre/wheel choice

Looking for any advice or recommendations as to what tyre would be best suited for my application of MX5. Its a NC Mk3.5, BBR Supercharged running around 260 - 270bhp. Currently on Rota Grid 17x7 i believe and not sure on ET. Tyres at 205 45 17 Michelin PS4 that will neeed changing in the very near future. Not keen on the Rota Grid look and after something different. As for tyre choices id be looking at going up to a 215 or even a 225 tyre in regards the amount of power its running. Its primarily used for weekend jolly car, odd trackday and very rare drive to work in the weather is decent. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers

I have a turbo and could light up rears of 17x7.5, 215/45/17 Faulkens.

Changed to 17x 8 and fitted 225/45/17 Goodyear AS6 (Best Ultra Performance road tyre for a 17" wheel) and it is night and day better.

From all my research this is my advise, this is the best combo, not saying you cant do different.

17x7 = 205/45/17 tyres
17x7.5 ET Max 42 = 215/45/17
17x8 ET Max 45 = 225/45/17

Might be better for you to go for wider wheels, strangely the bigger 225 tyre is a lot cheaper.

That was my complete thought of what to go for! 17 x 8 and Goodyear AS6. Was either that or AD08. Running AS6 on my daily and they are really good tyres. Think my main and go to plan was what you were saying. Just finding the right wheels with the ET. Sat on Meisterr coilovers with an alignment so i dont think it will rub the arches…

Good year as6, conti contact sports, Michelin ps4

This is 17x8 ET45 with Goodyear 225/45/17 AS6. I would say is the max ET as for me its borderline to far out at the front. Maybe ET48 would be better.

On Meister CTD’s not to low as I don’t like spending my time hitting everything

For your use I’d pesronally use Nankang NS2r

Love the look of yours! What wheels are you running there? Trouble atm is finding a wheels with 17 x 8 and an ET over 45. Fair few 17 x 7.5 with the ET. Dont want to break the bank with getting a set, anything under the £1k mark would be ideal.

Have you ran them for road use aswel Richard?

Yes I ran them on my modified NC1 for several years road and track. Not the stickiest on track, but not to bad in the rain. Loved them on the road.

Hi
This is the wheel, but didn’t get them here. I would def ask the ET before ordering. I’ve know a few people recently that bought wheels and they say “best Fit”, then turns out the ET is wrong.
Motegi Racing MR152 Gun Metal Polished Lip 17" Alloy Wheels - Wheelbase (wheelbasealloys.com)

Only slight downside is there not the cheapest of tyres either. Around 110 - 130 a tyre mark. Where as AS6 can get them for roughly 80 a tyre. Then i wonder if they will be that much better to drive on and worth the extra?

I run an 8j et42 but using a 215/45. Lowered on teins and haven’t had a single issue of contact or rubbing at all.

You’ll melt the AS-6 on track. NS2-R will not

Goodwin racing US site has a lot of info regarding wheel/tyre combinations and options. 215 width are much less likely to rub at the extreme and square shouldered track type tyres especially in 225 may need arch rolling or mods to arch liners.

Not if you get the right ET.

If it helps, my BBR 250bhp 25AE came on Bridgestone Potenza 215/40R17 and standard wheels.

I’ve been happy with them, but don’t have anything to compare them with (as I say, they came on the car).

Have you got a pic from the front quarter at all ?
they look good!
