Supercharger or turbo on mk1 1.6 110bhp version? Help

Intercooler

If you are running 9 psi without an intercooler, I think you may be heading for troubles. However, the main problem you have, and I agree with the tuner, is the fuel/timing control. A lot of guys run the JRSC straight out of the box with a powercard, but don’t look for anything more in power. In my experience, a good ecu will make a huge difference, I use a Megasquirt, as you can see in my earlier reply, also bigger injectors etc etc etc. Megasquirt is a cheap and easy solution, but finding a rolling road operator who understands it may be a problem. Over here I drive 280k’s to my bloke.

A nice thread here about a 1.8 install. The car belongs to a guy called Danny Irvine, he installed my sc, my forum name on the ozz forum is Big G. The thread covers a lot more than just the SC instal, if you just want to read that, then jump in at page 6

Geoff  Thanks for your advice, i will look into a megasquirt, but finding a tuner may be a prob, the tuner i used didnt recommend anything under £700 notes, phew?,anyway thanks again, the tuner did say i wouldnt blow the engine with the settings he as put the car at but that i would suffer with fuel consumption.[Y]  mick

G’day Mick, I bet the petrol is dribbling out of the exhaust[;)]

Have a look here[the old forum] http://www.mx5ocforum.co.uk/index.php go to the search at the top and type in Megasquirt, and select the
Modifications - Performance/Supercharge/Turbo There’s some good stuff on that forum, and I’m sure the guys wouldn’t mind an e mail, it’s also worth looking at MX5nutz, although some of the posters are a bit ****, there is a lot of good stuff too.

Just a though, I have no idea where you live, but I just typed   “dyno tuners megasquirt” into e bay and got a fair number of hits, most are forums but maybe worth a look, one that looked promising was  http://www.mtechautomotive.co.uk/engine-management/systems/ see what you think

I always find these threads interesting especially when the remedy is glaringly obvious. You are running at a boost level way outside the normal tolerances of the M45. What can the ecu really do? The ecu will control timing and fueling, but you’ll also need larger injectors to fuel the increased airflow. Buying a trick ECU and getting it mapped is a good idea, but unless you cool the intake charge you will run a high risk of detonation.

What you should be doing, in the first instance, is reducing the boost level. Then once you’ve added an intercooler, a better ECU, knock sensor, bigger injectors etc etc - increase the boost. Compare your mods to Geoffs and you may get an idea of what I’m trying to say here.

So pardon my brain being well slow here but if I wanted a moderate amount more power, like not a track day beast wringing every last ounce out of the engine or anything, I could either:-

Spend loads on a SC upgrading lots of bits and getting fancy engine management bits and bobs

or

Just bolt on a £1000 turbo and maybe a hundred on an IC and keep the boost on the calmer side?

Or am I missing something?

Or am I missing something?..

well, I would assume your missing any way to retard the ignition timing with relation to the boost.

Sorry I am ignorant when it comes to things like this, the greddy bolt oncomes with  “a
means to provide more fuel to the engine to support your car’s new new air habit. In most cases, this additional
fuel is provided by a GReddy E-Manage computer upgrade.”

Does this do that? If not how do you normally retard the ignition in relation to the boost?

I’ve listed my complete 1.8L engine/gearbox/supercharger setup in the for sale section, total is £1600 but can knock off £100 if you want everything. At 8psi, it’s more power than you wanted but that’s a nice problem to have.

WGT can fit the engine, supercharger and tune into a 1.6 car £1100+VAT. I’ll throw in the PowerCard Pro (16-wire FFS version) fuel piggyback controller if you do everything through them, all the kit is at WGT being removed this week.

My Greddy turbo install has fueling via an ajustable fuel pressure regulator and base ignition is retarded with no link between ignition and boost. I’m running 5.5psi of boost and have been for years, with no problems. The car will pull in 5th gear from 30mph all the way up to motorway speeds, so drivebility isn’t compromised from the retarded ignition.

A more complex solution would be better, but this solution works and is very cheap.

Edit to add - I’d posted all of that on the first page too. How old is this thread?

What is your base ignition set at?

6 degrees BTDC as in the Greddy instructions (I googled mine).

I distrubute the FastForward Superchargers in the UK now so all parts etc are in effect UK sorced and it gets better, I’m in Essex and can come to Kent or meet halfway to give you a ride or even better a ride.

Drop me a PM for details.
