Dear All,
We are organising an MX5 meet on 19th March 2014 at The Sussex Brewery (affectionately known as The Sausage Pub), Located on the A259 just South of Emsworth for a meal. The portions are huge so make sure you are hungry and come and join us for a natter and some seriously good food in good company.
The new menu is not available right now, as when I checked today the chef is in the process of writing it up a new menu. I am promised a copy of it early next week though, which I will post on this forum in due course so you can make your choices.
Please let me know if you are interested in coming along as soon as possible and by Sunday the 23rd February at the latest so I can let the pub know numbers.
I will also post details on parking as they don’t have a huge car park.
Hope to see you there.
Regards
Mal & Serena
Hi Folks,
I visited the Sussex Brewery “Home of the Sausage” in my lunch hour yesterday and discussed our booking with them over a nice pint of Bombardier.
A little History Lesson;
The Sussex Brewery was built about 1740 as a private house. Family legend has it that it was built for the Miller Family who originally came from Itchenor (near Chichester).
Abraham, a sailor, who was born in Fishbourne, and his wife Elizabeth Burstow were married in 1743. They had five children - Isaac, John, Abraham, Ann and Elizabeth. Abraham Miller was born in Emsworth (probably in the house) on the 19th August 1793 and subsequently married Elizabeth Harrington in 1823 in Alverstoke (near Gosport).
The Post Office listing of the time shows that Elizabeth was the license holder in approx 1840 - with a license to brew beer.
It was very popular at this time for private houses to brew their own beer and drink it in preference to the water which was not particularly safe or pleasant to drink. The beer was given to friends and if the brew was good many houses started to sell it to the public.
Emsworth eventually had 30 public houses but over the years this has reduced to just nine. Customers would bring their own containers to the house to collect the beer and this was the start of the “Bottle & Jug Trade” - a practice that lasted until the 1950’s.
The above is an extract from the "Southbourne Pictorial History Book and is written up on a blackboard in the main bar.
The booking is good and the car parking space is reasonable. As the 19th March is a Wednesday they do not envisage any parking problems. However, if the car park looks full you can proceed a short distance south (towards Southbourne) on the A259 and the next turning on the right is Thorney Road and people usually park down there.
The venue does several sausage meals for which it is famous and a sausage platter for sharing by two persons. Some brave souls have tackled the platter single handedly and lived to tell the tale - now there’s a challenge for you!
A snippet of the Suasage Menu is;
Spanish Chorizo - £9.95
The SATAN - £11.45*
Pork, Port & Stilton - £11.45
Drunken Duck - £11.45*
Toulouse - £9.95*
Traditional - £9.95
* = 50p supplement with a platter
There will be specials on offer on the night and the menu will be with me soon as it has been written and is just being finalised. I am promised a copy soonest to post on this forum.
Regards
Mal
Know the Sausage pub really well
Used to work down in Portsmouth and used to stay on Hayling, so used to visit the pub on a regular basis. Really, really good food
Josh
Apologies, my area co-ordinator reminded me that I had not stated a time - sorry Helen. So, to remedy this; we plan to eat around 7:45 pm, so please arrive 7:30pm onwards, or earlier if you wish!
I now have the menus from the Sussex Brewery but sadly cannot find a way of attaching them to this post. I have tried cuttng and pasting to no avail. I could not find anything that worked in the help section of the forum but maybe I am missing something.
If anyone has any suggestions please PM me.
Regards
Mal

Still they are amazing sausages.
Cant wait !
Dear All,
By way of an update; The Sussex Brewery have stated in an email back to me that usually they request pre-orders for bookings of over 10 people. So not to worry if we are down on numbers. If our numbers are about 10 or less we can order on the night and also choose from the Specials that are updated daily on the blackboards.
They have requested that I confirm the exact numbers of MX5’ers to them a week prior to our visit and wish us a pleasant evening. To this end please be sure to PM me if you are attending and your choices,just in case we exceed the magic 10 people. I’m sure we will
