I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Seat Repair
Hi
My tan leather drivers seat has the usual bolster issue, but also the main seat pad is completely ripped. Does anyone know of anybody that can repair seats?
Many Thanks
Duncan
I have read elsewhere that the driver’s and passenger seats are not the same, so the covers would not be swappable. Have you swapped covers before?
Thanks
Duncan
Don’t believe everything you read! the seats themselves are not interchangeable, covers are I’ve bought several sets of new covers over the years and fitted. They aren’t handed. Benefits of something like that is the seat cover would have aged at a similar rate to yours (possibly) so the patina would be a great match.
The covers are handed. On the outboard side, you have a big chunk of plastic covering the hinge. Obviously not on the inboard side.
Now you could say “but you won’t notice the two inch holes” when swapped, but I know I would. In addition, on the inboard side, there is an indented cutout in the foam for the smaller hinge.
Its possible the cheapo aftermarket covers leave it to the fitter to make the holes. NA2 squabs are have a minor bit of handedness; on the inboard side, there in the are cutouts in the material, to allow a bracket from the runner-seatbelt arrangement to protrude.
Yes, all the mk1 covers I purchased over the years were new, inexpensive and did not have preconfigured holes. Neither were they handed in any way. So, back to square one for OP I guess. Apologies to OP I did say, don’t believe everything you read! in this instance it was my own contribution that is in doubt!
Which is why the recovers tend to look like recovers; they don’t fit like factory.
There was a owner, “KFC”, on MX5nutz, who was a trimmer, with a sewing machine. He retrimmed his NA using proper hides (might have been Bridge of Weir hides).
My cloth seats were falling apart. I bought a set of used covers from a scrapped mx5 (Autolink) and learnt to fit them
(I have hog ring pliers now!), repair the cracks in those secondhand covers and to restore/ repaint and seal them using the proper leather restoration materials. It’s not been cheap as the proper resto kit alone is well over £100 and it takes hours and hours (days) of work but I’ve been delighted with the result and I removed the rust from and repainted the seat bases too and cleaned every component including washing the foam so its like I’ve never had someone else’s farty sweaty ■■■ on my seat.
